Is this a good deal?
Yes, I think this is a good deal.
Pretty hard to find a laptop that satisfy all these followings:
- Touch screen & 2-1 (keyboard flippable) - good for grandma's movie & media consumption
- Reasonable processing power (i5-1145G7 should be more than enough for office work and media)
- 16Gb of RAM - good for openning many tabs in Chrome
- Durable - lower tier ThinkPad is still a ThinkPad.
In fact, I bought one a couple months back for my in-law, same deal, and the laptop looked brand new. This will likely out-last her.
Very happy with the purchase.

Is it true the fan is on all the time and is loud?
if this were a year or two newer and//or had a better screen then i'd say yes. but in the $300 price point refurb you can do better, could get a surface laptop 5 around this price, in fact I got a refurb surface laptop 4 little over a year ago for less than this & with better specs ($215, 512gb, 16gb w/ same CPU). not that they are the greatest and should be your target, but as an example refurbs from a few years back can be had very cheaply considering their build quality.
the screen on this is not so good, in 2025 there is no excuse for a sub 300 nit, sub 1400 contrast ratio screen when the screen tech has improved so much relative to some of the other components. you stare at the screen 100% of the time, so a good screen goes a long way (just like a keyboard/trackpad). people harp on internal hardware so much when those 3 components are probably the most important hardware items on the device
