Any books you have purchased will be unable to be downloaded for backup or archive purposes.

If you haven't yet: Go to your Amazon digital content and Select: More actions > 'Download & Transfer via USB' for all digital purchases you've made.

This will allow you to have access to your files in the situation where Amazon decides to arbitrarily revoke your 'privileges' to access the purchases you've legitimately made.

You do have to have a device that can get books via usb (like an older kindle) in order to download the books. That might explain why you are not seeing the option via the digital purchases section of your account.
All that video does is explain why you would want to download the files. It does not explain it enough for me.

Meanwhile, So far, the method gets me ONE book at a time and I have about 500. If anyone finds how we can do multiple file downloads at a time, please explain how. "Selecting all", or checking boxes of multiple titles only downloads the first one.
----------------
Method:
From PC, Get to your library>Select a book>More Actions>Download & transfer via USB>Select a device from those listed>Download.

Then I get the AZW3 file on my PC.
----------------
The confusion was that I am not downloading to the Kindle selected but from my library titles in their records to my PC.

The way it is phrased on Amazon seems that I will be downloading it to my Kindle and would need to transfer it via USB to my PC.
The opposite happens. It comes to my PC once I choose a Kindle device from the list, and I have it for safekeeping in their AZW3 format. I can look up how to convert it and strip DRM if needed.

The video shows everything if you watch to the end, including how to download to computer.

You are correct in that the files are downloaded to a computer first to be later transferred to your device.

Like I said, it showed how, but did not explain it enough for me. I did figure it out at least. Amazon's phrasing (lack thereof) fooled me. Read my other comments.
It reminds me of how if you want to disable auto-renew for Prime it phrases it like you are canceling it right now and tries to scare you out of doing it.
So far I have DL a few pages of titles, but very f'ing tedious to do so one title at a time.

Unfortunately you have to do the books one at a time. It's worth it to keep your purchases though.

Needless to say, I won't be buying any more ebooks or ereaders from amazon

Can't blame anyone for stopping. My wife won't stop. They are almost all hers. She has and uses a Kindle Unlimited membership.

If you don't really own it when you buy it, then you haven't really stolen it when you pirate it.

EULA ~ changing the meaning of words like "owning" and "buying".

To be clear, if you thought you "bought" something so "youʾ own it, try to sell it.

It is impossible to "steal" digital "property," just like lighting a candle from someone else's candle is not "stealing" their flame.

I have a friend who spent tens of thousands of dollars on Fandango (formerly Vudu) movies. Stuff like this leads me to believe that anyone who purchases titles for an electronic library that they never actually own, which could disappear at any time - those people are crazy.
