In this case, it REALLY does need it. At least to me, these things are all about PREheating. I keep the heat low/off in my bedroom while I'm out, so getting into bed is COLD. With a good blanket on the bed, it stays really cold for a while even after you heat up the room air. I have a "dumb" heated mattress pad from a Slickdeal long ago, and I cracked it open and added Arduino-Alexa control to it. Now an hour before I head to bed (sometimes even before getting home), I tell Alexa to "warm up my bedroom" and it preheats. Most nights, once I'm warm in bed, I could just turn it off. I don't even need to waste much heat warming the room air. It's all about the hour BEFORE you get there.
A simple auto-start timer would do it too, like on a coffee maker, but I've never seen one with that. Simple outlet timers won't do it either because all of the modern heating thingies have "start" buttons, so you have to wire up the controller to "think" it has had its start button pushed.
I have multiple sizes of this blanket and it's really nice. I'm anemic and cannot get warm on my own usually. With the WiFi setting, I have it set on a schedule to turn on and start warming up 20 minutes before bed time. It's also easier for me to reach my phone in the night to change the settings if I'm not warm enough or too hot rather than reach for the controller. I do not have a dual zone one because my husband can't take the heat lol. But I work in healthcare and recommend this to all chronically ill patients. On a cold day, there's nothing like getting home to the blanket already warm because I could turn it on a head of time.
Why bash on a IoT item when there's obviously someone besides yourselves that could benefit from this feature? It's almost like saying why invent a TV remote, everyone is too lazy to turn a switch for a channel?

Anywhos, I've been looking for a WIFI blanket that I can remotely control to warm up my kid's bedding after a bath.

The same as the fridge and washer with built in AI. When did humans become so damn lazy that turning a knob and pushing a button are too difficult?

Nothing to add to the wi-fi debate, although I don't need it. Just wanted to say that I bought a king sized Sunbeam electric blanket in February 1981, and it still works. Well, my side still works. Hubby tends to be hard on things. You can't yank on these. I replaced the binding 3 years ago, and washed it.
That said, I doubt anything made today will last for 40+ years.

I have a wifi blanket. I love it. The best reason for the wifi is to set up schedules. For example, heat up before bedtime, turn it down during the night, and completely off in the morning. Using the app simply to manually control it is dumb, but the schedules are smart.

Wirecutter "Sunbeam LoftTec Heated Blanket: This is Sunbeam's thickest electric blanket. The heavy material felt unpleasant, and the shaggy texture reminded us of Muppet fur."

Am I the only person that realizes the only reason they added WiFi is to make you download an app so they can consume your data. This is ridiculous. Please don't support non-innovative products like this.
You don't think it had anything to do with consumers wanting to do things like set a schedule for it to turn on/off, or the ability to turn the blanket on remotely a little bit before they go to bed?

You're sticking with Big Bad Sunbeam, the notoriously data hungry kitchen and home appliance company wanting to collect customer data on *checks notes* heated blanket usage? (Apps can't just magically access all the other data on your device or network.)

my damn oven has wi-fi in it. nothing like being able to remotely start a fire in your house. forget some plastic on the top and preheat the oven, no worries, you get to dig it out of all the burners now.

Funny you say that 🤔.... I say the same thing about people who use washers and dryers...

I prefer to step on my clothes with my bare feet while in a large wooded bucket with some water and suds... then dry them on a clothesline....

Does wonders for my calves and gllutes 🍑.... Sheesh this lazy generation doesn't know what hardwork is... 🙄

*sarcasm is at play here* 🤣
