I considered buying something like this, then saw how ridiculously expensive they are, so decided to DIY. This is essential if you have kids and also if you have in-floor air returns (pulling air in, rather than blowing air out).

To DIY, you can buy a roll of some black, window screen replacement mesh (metal works best). Measure the opening of the vent, cut larger by 1 inch on each dimension. Fold extra 1 inch inward to fit on each side (like folding paper, just sharper), and then press in. Optionally, trim corners for neatness. Optionally, attach in place more firmly with some rare earth magnets (I used 1 rectangular on each side).

Like someone said, most vents are 4x12, not 4x10.

These should never have been priced in two digits.

I need this, urgently, but I have wooden air returns and the size its different 5.5"x11.5" on the outside and 4.5"x10.5" on the inside.

So wooden and magnets don't work and the size doesn't seem standard.

Anyone have a net/cover that will work for those?

Yeah I made some from an old screen door I was throwing out a few years ago. Didn't know you could buy them.

The 3rd picture of this product shows the multiple vent types (including a wooden vent).
