Bitcoin is the new gold, and Bitcoin average annual return is 60% when you smooth out the volatility. With stocks you are just breaking even with the (actual) rate of inflation around 7% unless you get lucky.Edit: I was a gold bug. I purchased about $50k of metals in 2013. until recently they were still worth roughly $50k. Had I put that $50k into Bitcoin when the BTC price was $100-300 in 2013, that amount would now be worth somewhere between $30,000,000 to $50,000,000, and I wouldn't be here on Slickdeals with all of you fellow cheapskates. if you have any doubts about Bitcoin, you haven't been paying attention.
i can give a gold coin to anyone, anywhere in the world, at any level of wealth or poverty, and they will immediately acknowledge its worth, off sight along. no language, no internet, no computer. gold is gold, code is code.

(In response to the comment above asking folks to invest in stock instead)

There is no guarantee of growth in stocks. In fact, many are signaling a pullback. Warren Buffett has exited his S&P 500 position entirely.

Gold is historically seen as a hedge against inflation, which went up last month.

The comments in this thread are wild. Do your own research, and be mindful of your cash flow.

A healthy cash flow helps prevent irrational decisions and premature liquidation of assets, especially when they're underperforming.
Are you talking about Warren Buffet's recent trades selling SPY/VOO which represented only 0.02% of his holdings?

This is cheaper than spot if my math works out correctly.

3.5274 oz times $2913 = $10,275

You are confusing troy oz with 'normal' oz, precious metal goes by troy oz, i troy oz = 31.1g while the 'normal oz is only 28.35g. So this price is actually not as good as you thought.

I can't believe people are doing this. This is so unsafe and risky. If you are really crazy about gold, then why not just invest in GLD?

Do you think gold will have a better return on value than a broad S&P 500 ETF over the next 5 to 10 years?
Gold is a store of value it is meant to maintain purchasing power

Wow. So instead of 1oz they're selling 100g now!? I need to apply for a new credit card to get this.
They've always sold the 100g as well, it just typically wasn't posted on SD.

Edit: there is also a 25g, 50g, and 1oz (OOS) on Costco.com if you don't want the 100g:

Greetings! First time Costco Gold buyer here -

I leave near NH which is a tax free state. Is it a good idea to drive to store to save on sales taxes OR buying it online should work better? I was told that there is no tax on Gold but I wanted to reconfirm that.

I am executive member, do I get 2% back if I am buying online for being exec member?

Where and how to sell the gold if need to liquidate?

I have Costco CC plus few other CC which can give me 2% back. Is there any other good churning strategy to use for max value?

Thanks!

Lot of "experts" in here. Please stop putting forth your opinions as fact.

I *BELIEVE* Everyone should have some exposure to physical gold. Maybe 10% of net worth.

I also *BELIEVE* that bitcoin, because it does nothing, is worth nothing. The price is irrelevant. It was 80k before then dropped to 10k. You can't point at the price of anything as a reason to buy it. There must be another reason.

I *BELIEVE* your physical gold is superior to etf gold for pretty obvious reasons. The ETF is an IOU.

I also have exposure to the GDX and the GDXJ as those are also bets on gold, but are surely more speculative as they are gold mining companies.

Not a bad price. Spot price of gold right now is $93.66/gram. So you're paying a $134 cost over spot.

From an investment standpoint though, it sucks. If you have $9500 to spend, put it in stocks.
You forget that if you are executive membership (which is only $60 more), you earn 2% $190 on this award. Additionally Costco visa would earn another 2% $190.

So $380 PLUS most states offer no tax on bullion when ordered so you are getting it hundreds of dollars below spot.

I understand that. I was replying to a commenter who was suggesting that gold was a better investment than stocks. It might be better than any individual stock but has not historically outpaced the broad stock market over time. If someone wants to store some monetary value in gold, that's fine, but most people should not be using gold bullion as an investment.

Today's mad run in the markets are not a reflection of the historical data. Risk v Return does not always favor the S&P is what I am saying. If you take 5 year periods, there have been times where S&P or Nasdaq have been very poor performers considering risk involved.

My issue with this is if you decide to sell it is all or nothing. At least with 1oz gold or silver you can move one piece at a time. Much more liquid.
Yes, some buyers will pay cash when selling 1 oz.
