She wasn't thrilled that it used the smaller glue sticks, but got over it quickly. She did try to use it on a few Christmas crafts this past year, but it had a really difficult time getting the glue to melt. I spent some time trying to troubleshoot, making sure the glue path wasn't obstructed with old glue, making sure it was charged, even making sure the room temp was warm enough before the glue went in. Nothing seemed to help.
We gave up and bought a standard plug-in glue gun. Now this one just sits (I think, there's a chance we threw it away).

Would this work instead of wood glue?
Edit: Bought one, sure I might need it eventually.

If you are asking if hot glue can be used in place of wood glue, you shouldn't be using either.

Wood glue can be a mess and doesn't stick to many surfaces. If you can't think of a use case, I typically wouldn't recommend you buy a tool. But since you asked, I recently had to repair a scratching post for our cat that was wrapped with sisal rope. Also recently glued a grommet to run cable under a soffit. Wood glue have made a mess and wouldn't be a clean removal.
I use wood glue on cheap furniture like from ikea.

i use this a lot for working with electronics, computer building/modding, and that type of things. like i just used mine to protect some soldering i did from flexing too much at the solder joint on the circuitboard, and to hold a npair 5v 3pin rgb connecters together because they kept wanting to come apart and i was out of the little plastic clips that some sets come with. i have also used it with cosplay/costuming in a pinch but even then usually prefer something like e6000 and its other brand equivalents unless real glue will eat the material.
i wouldn't use any hot glue for structural or anything under stress.

Rather not make holes/use clips.

For $20, get this instead if you don't mind the power cable.
