Aside from all the issues with the CURRENT dellrefurbished dot com - which is now completely handled by Fedex, and "refurbished" has a minimal meaning currently (I know this because I've purchased and returned a number of Grade A computers which weren't refurbished at all - for example, fans completely caked up with sh* ) ....

5420s have had a lot of problems. Not just the refurbished ones.

Quite a bit of problems with them shutting down randomly - absolutely no notice. Very difficult to figure out the cause. It can be everything ranging from not upgrading Bios, drivers, to problems caused by faulty RAM, to issues with Intel's new "sleep" regime. Can also be caused by Windows 11, which still has a lot of problems and compatibility issues. W11 was released without being fully developed.
For some reason, which isn't clear, the Latitude 5420 has a lot of problems. I've seen IT folks who oversee hundreds to thousands of computers say that they regularly deal with the random shutdown issues - they send them back under warranty and replace them with something else.

Others on slickdeal have mentioned that the 5XXX laptops released by Dell during the pandemic, are known for these problems.

Just be aware that this is refurbished by FedEx, and every single one of these machines I've bought has had a problem. Make sure and figure that out within the first hundred days of the warranty…

I swear I'd not buy another one, but I bought a 5420 recently through their site and only had to replace the battery since it was trashed. The rest of the machine runs great

Wait for the guys to jump and dump 'fedex' comments.

I bought a 7xx 2 in 1 3 years back, it was good.
In general, people comment are favord towarda 7xxx than 5xxx, i am not sure which models (i13 series or specific 5xx series). You have 15 days, if legit reason, no restock fee i think. Good price for good machine unless you get a lemon.

Purchased a good amount of equipment from DellRefurbished over the years. I did have one monitor go bad a few months after purchasing and I couldn't get a refund because they only offered a 30 day warranty. Hopped on eBay and found the same used monitor for the same price. My point is the stuff you're getting here isn't necessarily any better than the stuff you can buy on eBay from reputable sellers. To their credit, I've only had issues with the one monitor out of probably over a dozen other hardware I've purchased.

I'm running a dell latitude 5320 as a general web browsing computer. Other than a lackluster battery life which is fine for my use case it's been a great laptop for 1.5 years now

I've purchased a half-dozen of these (various) machine in recent years. One battery failed about two years in (7xxx series Latitude.) This one I just bought has 3 months original Dell upgraded warranty still. I've submitted for an ownership transfer. Anyone had luck with this? I intend to build out and fully test immediately.
Hello,

I suppose I will run every single stress test I can think of. Never actually transferred a Dell Warranty.

seems like a great deal? (looking for a new machine to run linux on)
I bought 4 refurbished by fedex dell optiplex or latitude machines for projects or family members and never had a problem with them.

I'm not a dell fanboy, but I use Latitude Precision and Optiplex machines at work and they're built to last.

Good to know before jump.

Do you have any recommendation - what DELL laptop model with i7 onboard have more stable build?
I use Latitudes e7470 at home (i7 6600u) , but time to upgrade coming
Right now, I'm very unimpressed with the computers from Dell in the pandemic era, & dellrefurbished.

If you buy from dellrefurbished, I'd say get the 1 year warranty, and be prepared to deal with problems. Absolutely run a battery report first thing, and if the battery capacity is at less than 80% of original, call them to replace. That's one more way they don't do what they should to refurbish computers - I suspect they just send them out with barely a glance, and hope for the best (knowing people lack knowledge, and many don't follow-up). I'd avoid computers that can only charge with USB-C (some also have a barrel adapter charger option built in, although may ship only with the USB-C adapter).

Of course, back up your data frequently.

Someone else has suggested buying Dell Precisions, but I'm not sure. I personally would stay away from the 3xxx Precisions, and maybe 5xxx or 7xxx are better than Latitudes, but that depends on the specific model (do research) and what specific components are included on a given computer. Precisions are more expensive, too.

I'd also suggest upgrading (free) to W11 right away as that upgrade can cause difficult-to-troubleshoot issues with Latitudes (there's a reason why dellrefurbished doesn't do it themselves). You also need to upgrade drivers and Bios. If you upgrade right away, within the warranty, and run into problems you can't solve (like random shutdowns with no warning), return the computer. W11 still has a lot of incompatibilities. Also, I only buy computers with the "Pro" version of W10.

You can run linux on about anything. I personally would look for something even cheaper, but there are many factors involved, so it all depends....
do you know which Linux version would be better on old laptop? I have couple hp Business laptops (almost 12+ old) with XP (core duo or later, but not newer processor) in good working condition, which i thought will flash with Linux and donate.

For the LInux question, use google - you'll find answers quickly and they'll be pretty comprehensive. There are Linux versions that work better on older computers.

There are better places to get help with Linux - go to a site that's dedicated to Linux (maybe even reddit), post your computer specifications, and ask. Based on my understanding, Mint should have run ok on a computer than ran XP, but I'm not an expert on Linux.

Purchased refurbished Dell 5420 July, '24. New battery was installed before I purchased it, and no issues to report. Running Linux Mint with kernel 6.6. Had a refurbished Dell 7040 had random power down issues. Disassembled the laptop and discovered motherboard battery connector was nearly ripped off the board. Did not fix it, gave it away.

Mint is a good one, but there are many others that are designed to need minimal hardware. Loading the OS or installing from flash is going to be a very slow process. It's not the fault of it being Mint. If your computer doesn't have a 3.1 USB port (colored blue), then using a 3.1 flash drive will make no difference.

Yeah, read problems with 5xxx refurbs.
But lately never seen anything cheap except for 5xxx.

Also, haven't seen anything cheap for past year for 12" or 13" laptops. Frown
Anyone know why?
I bought all of them lol. I still have 6 of them running. Gave away another 6.

Dell discontinued good models. Started using cheap pandemic parts, solder the usbc charge ports. Dell was just churning out like defective Ford F150 and dealing with warranty claim later as the lockdown demand was high

The 12 inch and 13 inch with intel 6th , 8th run like a dream on Win10

Never was a fan fragile 74xx and 54xx with Intel 10th & 11th gen. The older thick 5490 was thinkpad tough with zero issues.

In that era you had better luck with Thinkpad/Elitebook running win10, even acer/gateway was more reliable
