MD med student here. We recommend Omron to our patients in our outpatient clinic for home checking.

Validate is a program ran by the American Medical Association. These Omron cuffs are certified since their readings are pretty accurate compared to the machines we use in the office. Here is the whole list. We generally recommend our patients to buy from this list.

It's not uncommon for pressure to be higher at a Doctor's office.
Very highly rated blood pressure monitor if you care about your health stay away from cheap BP monitors or wrist BP monitors. I own this one .

I mean I brought this in to the doctor's office and compared to the nurse's measurement the machine was off by about 20%.

Mine is very accurate at the doctor's office but your blood pressure fluctuates quite a bit you need to get three readings at your doctor's office to get an average - than three readings from your blood pressure monitor to get an average to see how close they may be.

I know that sounds like a lot of work but when I have my doctor take my blood pressure first time it may be 140 / 88 second reading about 2 or 3 minutes apart 118 / 75 with their blood pressure monitor.

It's listed at $89.99 at Walgreens. How are you getting it for $20 lower than the amazon price?

A previous deal at Walgreens with ymmv coupon had this at $50.99 - that must be what they are referring to. This is a solid price here.

I got the 7 series a while ago for family and it's great. (Paid $40 in 11/22 for a similar deal) If you want to use it for family outside of the US though the Omron will NOT allow you to sync with an app not downloaded from the US Apple Store, even though they sell similar devices overseas. Big hassle.

An alternative that I also like is the Microlife device, usually around $45 but currently with $9 off at Costco. Not as comfortable for seniors to use as the bulky Omron with the bigger display, but more portable and also great.

Online you see this one on Costco only:
https://www.costco.com/homedics-b...77395.html

In store in Bay Area they have this one https://www.costcobusinessdeliver...45754.html Comes with power adapter and pouch and does the usual 2 people and bluetooth etc. I have been using one for 2 years now while the Omron is overseas (needed to switch Apple accounts to download the US version of the app). Got another micro life now on sale for the in-laws.

Use the Costco mobile app and search your nearest warehouse(s) for item # 1268341.

Don't forget to use your FSA card or expense it if you use an FSA account!

Also, this is a great read related to the topic:

And if the machine is 20% lower than office measured blood pressure, what do you recommend?

There can be a lot of factors that play into readings being off. Not discrediting the fact that you may genuinely have a defective cuff as it can happen and these devices are calibrated once in the factory versus yearly like they are in the hospital. 20% is a huge discrepancy for sure. I'd still recommend you try another Omron model if you are suspicious with your device. Or use one of the other models on Validate.

Typically when you walk into a doctors office your BP will be the highest (factors such as walking to the office, anxiety aka white coat hypertension can play a role).

This is why it's generally recommended to never use the 1st data point of elevated Bp on a patient esp if it's higher than usually. The most accurate reading will occur 15 min into your visit when you are calm and sitting.

Make sure the readings with your home machine are done on the same arm with same cuff size.

I imagine it was defective, but regardless, I still say to have the doctor check its accuracy at the minimum.

I found the notes from when I had them check the accuracy, I'm sure you can see why I mentioned my experience with it. (Taken over 30 minutes, but they didn't put the times in the notes.)

Omron: 127/92, 136/85
Doctor's machine: 162/82, 152/86, 160/85
Nurse auscultation: 155/74

Just to add to this: Even just the batteries can play a part in how well some at home devices work.

The Omron Series 10 comes with an AC adapter, as do many of the other models.

Ideally, there shouldn't be any major variances, so you'll know right away if the batteries you have are starting to go bad.

Yea then definitely could be the machine itself is defective. This would be the difference of adjusting meds vs continuing similar management so understand why you were concerned.

large cuffs or loose can underestimate but I'm leaning that your device is likely defective

I've never thought about this factor. I'll have to keep a close eye next time someone's readings are off and they bring their machine to see if it makes a difference. Thanks!

If you trust the doctor's assessment, you can always recalibrate your machine in the settings.

With that said, it's really just a digital offset on these machines, so it won't be much in the way of true accuracy.

The better bet is to get multiple machines and just establish a baseline average, because a brand new machine costs less than professional calibration. This is basically what the Omron monitors with TruRead try to accomplish.
