I have this, an absolute beast of a processor. Love it. Probably way overkill for my needs and most people's needs.
I would consider going to AM5 instead, since you are not on AM4 it would perhaps not be wise as far as future upgrade path to jump head first into AM4 platform now since it is a dead end path for you after this CPU
Same, still rocking this and an RTX 3090 FE, no issues. I have no compelling reason to upgrade.

based 2 builds on this processor, one of which I'm building this week, the other built a year ago.

I'm kinda tempted to upgrade my studio rig to one of these from a 3900x....

I just switched out my 5800X which I've had since 2021 for a 5700X3D last November since it only cost me $145. If I could get the 5950X for $200-250 then I would probably be all over this, but I understand that's unrealistic. Just saying since I spent over $320 on my 5800X.

Nice, I was waiting for a decent deal on this or the 5900xt and this fit the bill. This will be end of the line CPU upgrade on AM4 for me as I switch out my 3900xt for this.

Whats a good MOBO to go with this? Wanted to reuse my old pc case, with 850w ps, currently running i7-4790k with corsair water cooler and an old gpu. Yes, its been that long since i upgraded. Haha. Upgrade would at minimum need a MoBo, and DDR4. I can probably wait to upgrade the gpu when there's deals. Not for gaming, but wanted to use it for video editing with davinci resolve studio (paid version).

Bought mine for $940 (with markup) in 2021 to mine the stupid chia coin. Sold all other parts but kept the CPU to today. It's still very capable especially when you consider the low tdp.

Excellent for its time, but for the price, get a new chip, 9000 series. I upgraded from 5900X to 9950X and it's a massive difference. As far as TDP, just go into BIOS and run it at 95W, 105W or 120W. Whatever you want. I run at 95W and the performance is far beyond what I was getting previously. Microcenter had bundles for as low as $700 and then $650 with 9950X, motherboard and ram. That's a steal. By the time you buy this 5950X, motherboard and ram, what are you at? Like $500-550 minimum.. Spend the little extra and get everything else that goes along with it.. pcie5, faster USBs, efficiency, more USB-Cs, more power delivery USBs, better Wifi, twice as fast RAM, etc

I have the "MSI MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard" and apparently this is the last line. Between this and 5900xt, more efficient, I wanted 5900xt for that reason. Should get 5950xt or wait? I'm not in a hurry, got 3700x.

Bought a 5800x, 5900x, and 5950x all on release day back in 2020. The 5950x and 5800x I used initially in mine and my wife's computers respectively. I was going to do a build for a friend with the 5900x, but that never happened so it sat on a shelf. Then after 2 years my 5950x started to have memory controller degradation issues. Took me and many others a long time to figure out what it was since the event viewer logs just were showing an error with WHAE and certificate location errors from AMD. After that, I sent it in for RMA and switched to the 5900x I still had. Got the replacement but was to lazy to swap back.

Now fast forward in my story to 1 week ago and my wife's 5800x started to do the same thing with the memory controller degrading on the chip. Same errors my 5950x had. So for now I finally put the 5950x that I got back from RMA into my machine and gave my wife the 5900x while going through the RMA process on the 5800x. I was hoping to wait for all that until the 9900x3d came out on the 12th, but alas the stars did not align for me on that.
That being said, this is still a great processor, as long as it isn't the initial wafer batch stock that could have memory controller issues.
