so youbdo not know the downstream tb3 port could be used as a display port
I do know, and thats still 1 short compared to my current docking station, not to mention my current also has an HDMI for a total of 4 video out options. So my dock a HP G4 Thunderbolt would be considered a High end dock with the price tag to follow. You do know some people have 3+ monitor setups.....

I know but gaming usually does not need multiple (3+) monitor and this dock is labeled for gaming

and if do need more monitor, there is a TB to dual DP splitter......

more important, this dock needs to consider bandwidth for the NVME, limiting the monitor port could potentially reduce the possibility of allocating all 40Gbps to video signal while leaving little to PCIE

I know plenty of gamers and streamers with more than 3+ monitors, and you just proved my point thats its not a high end dock with the bandwidth comment, adding splitters leads to issues. All that being said for the price its a still a good pick up since it comes with a 1TB drive or dock by itself for even cheaper.

how is having a high speed external drive attached not make it a high end dock? but multiple monitor support does?
more docks support multiple monitors than docks that support high speed external drive. I've got several docks that have tons of monitor support sitting in the closet.

This dock can used by anybody needing that speed. Like people that work with digital media. The detachable cable makes it much better than any of those dell/hp fixed cable docks.

Also people using "high end" docks should have high end computers with multiple TB4 ports. Use the other one for monitors, or hook up an egpu and hook up even more monitors without using DSC

but honestly, having 4 4k monitors is kinda pointless. Way too much neck strain.

Cause you can hook up a USB hard drive or thumbstick to any dock, you cant add an extra port or multi monitor support to a dock....

I stuck a Samsung 990 Pro SSD in mine and was also worried it was running hot. There were various discussions on the web of how the built-in fan never turns on, or does not turn on until around 80c, which is very high. Anyway, what I did was solder a wire to a solder point labelled "5V LED" on the circuit board and wired it to the built-in fan. The fan now run continuously, but still very quiet (5V on a 12V fan). It runs a lot cooler now.
Can you take a picture of how you did that?

either high end or not has nothing to do with the total bandwidth, it is 40Gbps even you pay $1000 and feel high of it

dock with different targeting clients has different strategy of allocating bandwidth between video signal and pcie data

PS

serious gamers would use desktop with GPU which already has at least 4 ports ,why to bother with a TB dock, and a monitor on TB dock would bring in very sensible lag between the graphic and mouse/keyboard/joystick input

the people who really needs a TB dock is those who use slim laptop that has very limited port option there, and slim laptop usually does not have powerful GPU to support gaming

SO

please enjoy your high end HP G4,

BTW

I have G2 (which share almost the same port configuration as G4) from long long ago, and I really do not think a couple hundred bucks would make me so distinguished (Oh , my G2 has VGA, is it higher end?)

PS

if you really are tech savvy, please read carefully Dan S. Charlton blog ( https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/) ,and you will know your G4 and D50 are of different generation.

do you really think a Apple watch Hermes Edition would be high end enough and superior to a 100 year-old Rolex because apple watch has more connectivity?

Lol amazing how many of you have your panties in a bunch cause I classified this dock as low to medium end instead of high end. While it isnt high end as mentioned countless times now, if your okay with the lack of monitor support which if your using gaming laptops is pretty much a must, for the price this is a good a dock...

Yep pretty tech savy, so I dont need to read some dudes blog to hear his opinion, thanks though.

I would caution against using this for the NVME + power aspect. Mine cooked itself within an hour of setting it up, and is now in read only mode.
If you don't plug your computer into the 87w t4 port, maybe it won't cook itself immediately.

I don't have a picture of what I did, but I did take a of picture of the circuit board. Here it is overlayed with the wiring.

- used some high gauge (thin) stranded wire.
- unplugged the fan header
- soldered red wire (positive) to the solder pad labeled "5V LED"
- used some electrical tape to tape down the red wire to secure it since the soldering pad is very small.
- too lazy to solder a black (negative) wire, so I just wrapped it around the screw as pictured and tightened
- stuck black wire inside the black connector of the fan header (negative)
- stuck the red wire inside the brown connector of the header (positive)
- left third wire (grey) disconnected (fan speed sensor)
- secured the wires to the header with some electrical tape (I should have used some heat-shrink wrap)

It's bit of a hack job, but it works. A cleaner way would have been to use a male header to match the female header of the fan, and soldered both positive and negative, but I just used what I had lying around.

As a side note:
- Connected to Mac Mini M4
- Not using the USB-C for power delivery, which would probably have increased the temperatures
- Ambient temperature around 23c
- Dock temperature measured via Macs Fan Control
- Without fan hack, temperature would reach over 85c under load
- With fan hack, idle around 50c and reaching around 65c under load
