I have one for my PS5, no issues with the 8-9 games played on it.

Solid drives, I've been using these without issue on multiple machines

As long as it is gen4, speed doesn't matter. It will work well enough. I have a gen3 speed gen4 SSD and it works just fine.

Will this be ok for a mid range gaming laptop? My 500GB is filling up fast. But not sure if the write speed and QLC is noticeable.

Read performance is adequate here and write performance is probably good enough unless you habitually transfer hundreds of gigabytes around. There's the KingSpec XG 7000 which is selling around $9 more which is TLC if you willing to take a bit of a risk on.

Up from there, the best near-premium drive is a SN770 at $109 (from Walmart).

Lowest price for 2TB SN770 at Walmart is currently $120.

I considered the drive in this thread briefly for a new PC build (mid-tier gaming PC) a few weeks ago.

Then I realized it was QLC, and I was a little concerned about the 450TBW rating, which is low for a drive of this size in this class.

I opted for the Silicon Power UD90 (currently $96 on Amazon) because it was TLC.

UD90 is QLC.

(Early drives were TLC, but they hardware swapped. Even the US75 drives are QLC now.)

SN770 shows $109 from me, the the seller being Sandisk:

I just bought two of these a few weeks ago for my new PC build and I've had no problems. I'm tempted to buy one more.

Is this a good drive to add to a laptop via USB for game storage? Unfortunately can't add internal storage.
Depends on the USB port. The fastest NVMe SSDs are so fast that you need Thunderbolt 5 (80 Gbps) or you're wasting money on fast memory. I have a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure with memory that is faster than TB4, and use it with a TB4 port. I can read/write 400 GB in 15 seconds, so it's stupidly fast. USB4 can do 40 Gbps, but from my research, the only way you will know it really does 40 Gbps instead of 20 is to find out on your computer. I'm not gambling on a purchased computer to figure that out. That's why I still don't care for USB4 and much prefer TB4 or TB5.

If you have 5-10 Gbps USB ports, you're wasting money on enclosed SSDs. Just buy the cheapest external plug-in that you can buy. And if that's the case, game storage will work, but it's not anything like storing it internally in the laptop or using Thunderbolt ports with NVMe.

Question about TBW. It relates to terabytes written right? I mean it's in the name. So if you you're using it for reading, like media, like for a PS5 that is mainly reading it shouldn't effect the longevity of the drive right?

Yes, and that is the main argument from people clamoring about "low TBW" numbers. Since TBW is nothing but a warranty really, and unless you write absurdly large amount of data constant you will never hit that number before the actual warranty expires, and it's not even close. Like the drive will outlast the life of your computer, type of time.

But everyone has a different use case, and I'm not going to poo poo on their needs, I just wish they wouldn't scream at everyone that it's bad, because it's bad for them.

I personally wouldn't use these for OS drives due to no Dram and it's QLC, which means once it gets past 1TB capacity it will start slowing down dramatically.
These are great as storage drives that you don't need to access everyday, like family memories and documents. Try these links. I'm not affiliated with these reviewers and receive no compensation by posting such links, but both are very informative.

If I didn't already have a NVME drive in an enclosure I would've picked this one up for an external drive.

Depends, if your upgrading from a HDD on an inexpensive PC then yes it will be a fine upgrade. but if your using it as a boot drive for a new or newer PC then no, there are much better options. But its more of a secondary drive, since it will slow after 1tb but still be better then an HDD.

absolutely not.
This is faster than 99% of installed boot drives out there. The average person does not need a PCIE gen 5 NVME in RAID zero to boot up their 5 year old laptop.

M482 2tb which is much faster is on sale at Amazon for 110. Might be worth the extra 25 bucks. I'd probably get this one.
