That's with an M3 processor (2023 model vs 2024) and a 11 core (vs 14) CPU and 32 core (vs 14) GPU. Aside from the 1 year later model and what would be support for OS, I think yeah, the $1800 one would be more worth it with that much price difference than getting the latest.

This vs 16" M4 Pro 48gb ram and 512 ssd on an open box deal for $2200? Planning on using it for docker containers, some dev and local inference

Is the Max in a 14" not faster than a pro in a 14" ?

It is, but 16" has better heat management ( 2 fans vs 1 in 14)

Here's how the fan setups differ between the MacBook Pro with M3 and M4 chips:

- **MacBook Pro M3**: The base model (14-inch) has **one fan**, while the higher-end models with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips feature a **dual-fan system**.
- **MacBook Pro M4**: Across the range, the M4 models include a **dual-fan setup**, providing consistent cooling for enhanced performance.

That may be true but the 16" will still have more headroom because of the increased thermal capacity

I personally wouldn't get a 14" Max if the intention was to make use of that increased power consistently.

Snagged it. It's the binned M4 Max, I'd say this is a better fit in the 14" chassis than going for the unbinned. Great price on a great computer!
