Sony learned from Nintendo that if they produce crappy controllers, they can make more money. So they're essentially forcing our hand, since they won't service them
Kudos to Nintendo for fixing for free

Luckily those controllers that come with a Switch are too small even for children, so we just replaced them all with $5 ones from Amazon that have worked fine for years. Never bothered trying to fix it or get it replaced, they just went right in the trash.
I also hate that I'm just on the edge between "I can solder" and "watching a video of this makes me think it'd be pushing the limits of my abilities."
But, your comment got me to looking and there's a local shop that will replace both sticks for $50 (kudos to whomever does this guy's SEO because I was NOT searching for something local when this popped up.) Considering the sticks themselves would run $32, I'll probably go this route.
I got a Victrix around a year ago from Amazon "used - like new" for around $100 and it looked brand new. It's an excellent controller, a night and day difference and 10x better than the DualSense controller. It also works with PC and Xbox.
If you know how to Solder I'd recommend buying Hall effect joy sticks and replacing them. This is somewhat difficult so if you can't solder, pay someone to do it for you. It'll be cheaper than the dual sense edge and a one time purchase.
EDIT: by DIY, I'm implying that someone who is willing to do an entry-level solder job could swap TMR joystick modules in DualSense controllers. Look up the Aknes store on Amazon and other places to find the parts, also some great PC/Switch third party controllers.

Only controllers that last for years are wired Razer V2 and GameSir controller. I own both for my primary rig and my laptop and won't buy anything else.
