This is a good deal if you really need the RAM and storage. For most people, the base configurations will offer insane value. For people with kids, $1300 can fetch you two great computers. $800 for any base MacBook Air (m2/m3) and $500 base m4 mini. You can later get a fast nvme external storage that you can use across these two.

Naaah sorry but that's a dumb combo, most people would likely be better off combining the budget to slightly upgrade the MacBook Air and dock it to a larger display...instead of dealing/managing two base model computers.

Also, kids like iPads and Fire tablets 😆

Price not being an issue, which would be better for video editing and playing 4k videos? This or M4 16GB 256SSD?

Price not being an issue M4 24GB 512GB. If price is an issue, m3 24GB 512GB because if you ever have to carry an external drive to hold files (256GB can be filled pretty easily), it will be an inconvenience. More RAM will also be better for video editing. If you're willing to make the tradeoff between perhaps a little faster video editing performance with M4 in exchange for more storage and memory, it's probably a more balanced solution.

You can have it open if you have display link manager

Really tough choice between this and the M4. Just got the base M4 and will probably keep it since it'll be my vacation device. My work device is an M1 MBP with a 32gb of ram. The use of the ssd as a swap drive is actually quite a lot for a 16gb device if you browse a lot and use chrome. 32gb keeps SSD usage to a minimum.

Also, the integrated GPU shares ram so if you game a little, the little bit of extra ram will go a long way. The GPU performance has improved by less among macbook air models than the CPU performance. Don't know if 24gb is enough, but it should help a little on wear and tear for the SSD and give more longevity to the device.

512gb is also a big upgrade if you need. I run Xcode and a few other programs and I'm hitting about 150gb or so. When I go on a trip, I like to watch movies and if I use my own, it can take up over 100gb easily. Itunes and Apple TV videos are more compressed so that I never have a problem carrying enough even with only 256gb and I download about 10-20 episodes/movies at a time.

Overall, I feel most people using this as their main computer should get this over the m4/16 instead. The little bit of extra ram and space will go along way over many years of use and apple normally charges about $200 extra for each upgrade and you're getting both for much less.

Can someone Mac knowledgeable recommend a model for my kid that's getting ready to go to college? She's only had Windows laptops to date from school, if that matters. Has used an iPhone for years though.

No engineering, CAD etc. just normal paper writing, etc.

Thanks

Get 850 m4 MacBook air 2025 256 GB 16 GB ram
best bang per buck until next trade in

Ideally more storage but apple charges you 300 bucks for that better off buying cloud from Google or Microsoft than apple.

Then trade in for next yr. Instead of over paying.
M3 versions are a bit over priced this one is ok I guess but you won't get hired trade in values either. It's an ok deal.

You can also hack the mb and install 2tb of storage or more.

A year is a long time. I got my M3, 16GB 512GBSSD in Dec for 1099. No regrets.
Same. And that's a long time in tech terms.
