that's a great price for new. I paid only $70 less for a "used" one at best buy. for performance, this is similar CPU to an M3 Air (this is slightly better multithreaded, slightly worse single) but almost twice the GPU performance. it's a lot heavier though…

Is it still? I have exactly the same machine, bought Apple Refurbished for $1270 over a year and a half ago (only $200 more than this). I would have expected it to be cheaper by now. Unless you need a 16" I'd just go with a more recent 14".
for someone who really wanted the ports and 16" screen, this was the ideal machine for way cheaper than the M3 at the time (and M4 now) the vast majority of people don't need the latest and greatest, this will be equally fast for almost all tasks.
that said, my son's 15" M3 air ($800 at the time) is sooooo much lighter and I'm jealous.
I was gonna jump at this deal and noticed the 16 gig RAM and so I googled RAM upgrade. It is NOT upgradeable because it is soldered. It is very annoying Apple does that. Never mind...

Got 16" M1 refub from BB for almost the same price around half year ago, for new I think this should be no brainer for someone who needs large screen. I still drive my 15" air once in a while but these are just so much better for everything besides the weight.

Laptop weight is a major deciding factor for a lot of people.
The air is a crappier machine than this in so many ways except for weight.
Pro has more ports, mini led screen, better GPU, better speakers, brighter display, and fans when you want to drive the machine hard.
More ports: I'm not plugging in that much into the machine, and I have port replicator docks if I do.
Mini led screen: Promise you that 90% of people couldn't tell the difference looking at them side by side.
Better GPU: It's not going to make any real difference unless you're pushing it to the extremes. The entry level M4 air is plenty fast enough.
Better speakers: I use headphones because I'm a considerate person.
Brighter display: On this M1 Macbook Air, it's plenty bright. If you need brighter, may I offer the bright idea of seeing an eye doctor? If you need a screen to be giving you a suntan from across the room, then perhaps you have other issues you need to get looked at. Seriously.

I've always said, if you can't clearly articulate the need for a "Pro"-tier machine, then you'd be perfectly fine with the Air. It can do almost everything the "Pro" can do, just a little slower if it's super heavy duty workloads.
I use this machine for live music performance, video editing, and gaming. It's better than the M2 pro or M3 pro for audio production, at least in Logic.

Fans: I don't need a noisy machine, thanks.
