I got this motherboard back in December when it was bundled with some free ram. with my 9800x3d, it has been rock solid and stable. I had weird network driver issues that I later determined to be linked to gigabyte speed/ network accelerator being installed along with gigabyte control center. That software is junk and should never be installed.
It's not really about out of the box performance. More expensive motherboards have better VRMs allowing you to overclock if you want, and providing better stability for extended CPU intensive workloads. You also get better thermal management for your M.2 slots, more M.2 slots, more USB ports, SPDIF out and so on and so forth.

With money being no object for a mobo.....I am not sure these expensive mother boards will outperform cheaper ones, and if so by what percentage? 1-2 percent? And newer chips barely overclock enough to warrant doing it these days.

This one has PCIe 5.0 16x slot sharing lanes with 2nd and 3rd SSD M.2 slots, but if you can use 1 SSD PCIe 5.0 / 4.0 in the first M.2 and maybe one more less critical for performance in the chipset-driven #4 - it's okay. I like that it doesn't share PCIe 5.0 16x with 2 PCIe slots. It is pretty good for some weird network or USB cards in those 2nd / 3rd PCIe slots, and there are no concerns about compromising the primary PCIe slot for GPU. Not a good choice if you need 2 GPUs, though.
I bought one for my new build.

$309 for a mobo is 2-3 times what the average builder spends. Crazy.

Sadly the average prices have gone up quite a bit with each new AM5 motherboard. The X670E were equally expensive when first released and now finally coming down to more reasonable prices at or under $200.

I picked up Aorus Pro X870E during the winter sale which also included 32GB DDR5 6400 memory for around $360, so for me the RAM help offset the overall price. That said, if you do have these boards, you might run into issues with the AMD AGESA 1.2.0.3a patch. My 9800x3D machine had BSODs after the F4a BIOS update, but the F3 bios on AMD AGESA 1.2.0.2b is very stable with curve optimizer under-volt and overclock enabled. So just something to be aware of if you're updating your BIOS. Also there will be random tool tips in Spanish...fun times for a +$300 board lol

The current one where B650 boards are $109-$130.
yea for the absolute worst ones that don't even have heatsinks on most of the components. Any decent board is still going to run you 200 or more. Even the b650e-e's are 300+

It's about better looking heatsinks. Even though most people not running the 16 core on renders don't even need the VRM heatsinks, they can run passive.

If the case has airflow at all, they can even push the 16 core if they don't use pbo.

Performance measurements are within margin of error.

why would you think / say that? i got this same board for 225 on amazon, this domew with a 1tb ssd, if you dont need the ssd, just get the board itself. its a solid board, well built and tooless m.2 drive, and it also comes with one m.2 ssd heatsink .

those junk boards cost that much for a reason, because they are junk. boards in that price range, like the asus prime ax ii and gigabyte HS3H, have weak VRMs. the CPU will be starved of power and underperform. if you have a midrange or better AM5 CPU and you stick into one of those trash boards, you are basically flushing money down the toilet on your CPU.

those cheap boards are meant for APUs, like ryzen 8000. that's obvious from the fact that those boards have a disproportionate amount of power phases for the iGPU relative to the CPU itself.
you're clearly not supposed to stick something like a 9900x into them. even a 9700x would be a stretch for them

additionally, better motherboards also have built in wifi 7/bluetooth 5, multi-gig LAN ports, USB4 chipsets (these are expensive!), more M.2 slots, better audio, debug readout LED screens, etc.

if you don't need those extra features, then obviously this isn't for you and you don't need to be here. but since you are here crying, i'm going to assume that you are just too slow to understand what it is you are looking at. if you can rub two brain cells together and look at the specs, you should not need someone to tell you why these cost what they cost.
