doubtful the ones during the holidays were 12 gauge, as 12 gauge isn't really needed for lights

I have a Southwire 50' yellow 12/3 and it's a very good and rugged cord. It's important for a 100' cord to go with 12/3 gauge if you anticipate even a moderate load.

I prefer smaller lengths, especially at the lower gauges. Easier to manhandle and wind up when doing using them. And since so many of my uses involve short runs, it's nice just to grab a 25 or 50 footer and not have to deal with a 100 footer for the 10 feet I need.

100' 12/3 made in U.S.A regular price at Sams club $59 pure copper wire. Currently on sale for $32 in some areas YMMV. I picked up 4 last weekend and they are still showing that price online for me. https://www.samsclub.com/p/exteni...od21340649 so the $53 price really isn't too exciting IMO.

Yes, it's just copper 12 gauge wire. You can use whatever is cost effective

Recommend using romex if you want to sell the house or pass inspections in the future. Romex is color-coded, so it's easy for inspectors to confirm the wire gauge is correct.
