No, those claims are unfounded. It's not anything recent either, it was just a few forums posts from the past 2-3 years about users having issues seemingly after an update. Louis Rossman just now made a video about it which is why it's getting attention but he's waiting on official response from Brother. They still do not require OEM toner

Man what happened to the $100 printer
Same exact price at Staples, and at Staples you get $62 back in Staples rewards money, making it a much better deal.

How much did that MFP cost in current $ when you factor in 10 years of inflation? If it was $100 in 2015 we aren't going be talking $100 in modern terms.
My point in the previous post was to help SD'ers by reporting my experience with a similar model the MFC2700 which has lasted 10yrs and has done a good job

$100 in 2015 is worth $133.16 today.
Not sure what the point is I still can buy the printer for under $200 today,

Sorry, Here are the reset steps

How to Reset Brother MFC-L2700dw, MFCL2700dw drum or toner
Is your printer asking you to replace the drum even after you replaced it with a new one? If so, please follow these easy steps to fix the issue:
Reset Brother MFC-L2700dw Drum:
1. Make sure that the machine is turned on.
2. Open the front cover.
3. Press and hold OK for 2 seconds.
4. Press the Up arrow key or 1 to reset the drum counter.
5. Close the front cover.
If you need to reset the toner, please follow these steps to clear the message:
Reset Brother MFC-L2700dw Toner:
1. Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps.
2. Display should read "Front Cover open".
3. Hold the 'OK' button down for a few seconds.
4. Display should read "Replace Drum".
5. DO NOT follow prompts on screen.
6. Type in * 0 0 (Star Zero Zero) on the keypad.
7. Close the cover. Your toner is now reset.
If you need to order Brother mfc-L2700dw toner or drum, please click here or call us at 760-431-3756
These steps reset the counter which hits a 99999 pages bug. I have used it successfully to revive a seemingly dead printer

Why????
And... it's not a 'LITTLE' more - it's more like $100 more after the discounts.
Why are you on Slickdeals if you like overpaying?
Well, store credit is not like $ off and when it craps out in 13 months, you'll wish you had gotten it from Costco.

I never questioned that, but great info for you to share.

I'm not hung up on the $200 mark, I was simply stating the common $100 price of a decade ago for a (decent) laser all in one printer may no longer be the norm but everyone else seems to be shoehorning in other topics into the discussion....

I have a similar Brother machine about 8 years old and works flawlessly. Wireless printing, duplex printing and scanning and cheap generic toners. Paid $100 refurbished back then.
Same. I have much older Brother 2550 version of this. Used generic and oem toner. AirPrint is great. No drivers.

Doesn't want to die.

Indeed these prices are very high.My Dell E515DW for $85 in 2017 is still working solidly.Sadly there is no support and firmware may be aging.Printing from Android devices is flaky now.Scanning to multiple devices is not possible. If anyone has clues to the Dell E515DW please share.Thanks.
Maybe I bought it the same time as you and that price. There is a new firmware just a year old and everything works great for me from anywhere.

I have the DCP-L2540DW which is a very similar printer, uses generic toner, no subscriptions required.

So about $200 in modern money? My Samsung laser all in one was was probably $100 back in 2012-ish. Fast forward a decade or two and $200 is probably the new norm (like I alluded to).
Not quite, $80 20 years ago is $130 today.

$100 in 2012 is $138 today

I do take the point about people printing less

The point remains the same anyway. I wasn't being literal with $100 = $200 over X time period. LOL....everyone seems obsessed with nitpicking the nominal figures and not the point which they made (a point it seems like no one can find fault with).

This one has fax capabilities which is likely the increase of price. The model I have - DCP-L2540DW - is the one you're thinking about. Via Amazon I bought it in 2015 for...$99. Best Buy no longer sells it but seemingly was about $150. I think knowing this information and knowing general inflation this is probably a great price if you can't get your hands on a DCP-L2540DW.

Some folks are arguing over the $80-$100 price of yesteryear.....again, that model, the DCP-L2540DW, didn't have fax. I dunno if I'd paid more for a fax version, but it likely existed for a higher price. We'd have to factor that into this argument

I'm pretty sure that the right to repair doesn't say that a printer manufacturer has to make the printer so it can accept generic toner. It says that the printer company can't sue the manufacturer of the generic toner for patent infringement.

No, but a class action lawsuit going back to the 1990s does

I cannot believe this sub-$100 printer, nowadays is above $200.
The inflation sucks, eggs price is sky high...

Those lawsuits were over companies pushing a software update after the printer was purchased to make it incompatible with generic toner. No one has been sued or is claiming that a printer company has to make a printer so that it accepts generic toner in the first place.
