Before considering a purchase of one of these units, I suggest that you look at online comments related to this specific device. I've used JBL/HarmanAudio products for decades and have never been dissatisfied with any of their devices, until purchasing this one.

As I've used the original JBL Charge since 2013, without issue, I purchased a JBL Charge 4 on clearance at Costco, in May of 2023, as a gift for my daughter. Frankly, I forgot about it and it remained in a closet until July of 2024, when I heard an intermittent beeping coming from the bedroom. A search found that the new/unopened JBL Charge 4 was intermittently turning itself off and on.

An online search found that this was a known issue with the unit, with suggestions to address the problem, none of which were successful (yes, I reset the unit, updated the firmware, etc). In the end, I spent days attempting all of the suggested fixes (multiple times, in some cases) and to no avail (note: One Reddit user did note that they were able to resolve the issue by disassembling the unit, detaching the ribbon cable and reattaching it. That might be an option if all else fails). A call to HarmanAudio support was a total waste of time and they were unwilling to replace the unit or offer any assistance, as it was over 1 year old; despite the fact that it was new in the package and that this was a known issue with the unit. Since the unit could not simply be turned off, as it would turn itself back on, I was left with no other option than to throw it away, given their "solution" that I send the unit in for repair (at my expense), with the quoted minimum repair cost exceeding the purchase price.

My suggestion is to look at other options. Frankly, I'm shocked that these are still being sold, as the latest firmware update was intended to address the problem (as previously noted, it did not). As shown in the following search, many others have experienced similar issues, with their JBL Charge 4 randomly powering on and off:

This video, provided by another frustrated Reddit user, demonstrates the issue that I and many others have experienced (remember, mine remained sealed in a blister-wrap package, unopened, for 1.5 years before the defect appeared, while the package was still sealed; so, nothing to do with how it had been used, as had been suggested by HarmanAudio customer service, when these issues have been reported by others):

Dang. It probably goes without saying but, you should at least turn on electronic stuff as soon as it arrives just to see if it works as expected; there are lemons out there. I love my Charge 5's & my extreme 4 but I never got a hold of any Charge 4's.

Riiight, noted, that's very helpful; but, you're missing the point. Like many others that come here on a regular basis (and have for years), I've come to rely upon the Slickdeals Community as an invaluable consumer resource, due to our members' diverse knowledge base, their expertise on a myriad of topics and for their willingness to generously share their knowledge and experience with the Community. Furthermore, I appreciate the honest/unfiltered reviews that are found here and always consider the dialogue contained within the various forums extremely valuable when considering purchases. Personally, I've been spared from many unwise purchases by the information shared within these forums and, by the same token, have been directed to bargains that I would never have found on my own. This place has helped to make me (and so many others) a much better informed consumer and I appreciate the efforts of all who contribute to make Slickdeals what it has become, an honest/unbiased "one-stop shop" for consumer related issues, where others just like us can share their experiences for the benefit of their fellow Community members. Thanks to all who contribute and, in the process, continue to make this the unparalleled resource that it has become over the years!

Hmm, k. But what do you mean "unbiased"? Even your comment/review is biased based on your own interaction with the product. I think you may have missed the point hiker; open your stuff when ya get it. This will likely alleviate any issues with lemons if you incorporate this practice into your purchasing routine it will serve you well. And don't expect customer service to replace something you held for over a year, even if it is "in the package". Oh, another thing, warranty extension from credit cards such as the AMEX Platinum would work well here. I used it on some JBL headphones and actually made money (stacked AMEX offer and Dell credit from AMEX Biz Plat) and I still got to keep the product because AMEX didn't require me to send it in. There's 2 nuggets for ya. Happy hump day bud.

Thanks for those additional "nuggets", kneel. This is exactly what I'm talking about when I refer to the generous nature of the SlickDeals Community and how it pays to read through the various threads, thoroughly (you never know what "nuggets" might be buried, even in an impromptu rant). Case in point, had I considered that additional 1 year extension of the warranty, the 1.5 years that had passed since the unit was purchased and when the defect began to present itself would not have been as much of an issue.

Therefore, potential buyers should not make the same mistake that I did and assume that, based on years of positive experience that one might have enjoyed with JBL/HarmanAudio products, this unit will perform to the same quality standards that we might have come to expect from HarmanAudio. As shown in the links provided, other users have experienced similar lag-times of months/years between their original purchase date and the defect presenting itself, with these devices; but, hopefully if it does occur within two years and you're as savvy as our friend, kneel, you'll be able to turn this around to your advantage. Thanks for helping to make my point, "bud".
