I've bought 2 terramasters, a 4 bay in 2020 and a 6 bay in 2024 (ended up returning for a 6 bay QNAP). The 4 bay is still working, but buggy.

Terramaster is the price leader in consumer NAS. I've owned netgear, Synology, and now QNAP. I would say all have been more reliable, and better app support than Terramaster. So you get what you pay for.

Any of the 424 ones, that has the latest Intel iGPU that handles the latest 4K transcoding in hardware.

You could also get one of the others for storage, and then a ~$125 Intel N100 mini PC to run Plex and any other services.

A Yugo vs a Mini Cooper.

I put FreeNAS on mine (I think renamed TrueNAS now). It worked until it died about 2 years in and I bought my Synology five years ago, which has received regular and safe updates.

Terramaster customers (on TOS) have had repeated issues with ransomware/malware.

Nevertheless, their cost reflects their qualify.

From a benchmark perspective perhaps. From a stability and reliability perspective, the most important considerations for NAS for the great majority of use cases, Synology is light years ahead, hence the price.
for one the Synology only offer 10gbe built in on the higher end units, or recently the SSD cache...

I think that's should be standard on all NAS these days, but you won't get them without paying extra.

I like synology system, it's just annoying that they are gatekeeping the hardware.

It's honestly way overpriced and you can't even order it the best nas for the money no one can even come close to is the
AOOSTAR WTR PRO AMD RYZEN 7 5825U 4 BAY NAS
8 cores 16 threads 2x 2.5 network 4x 3.5 bays and you can put 3x m2 drives in the amd model and 2 in the intel I got mine on AliExpress for $310 each for the amd version and put in both of them 64gb ram 1x 2tb m2 and 2x 4tb m2 drives and 4 seagate 26 tb drives
All up I'm about $2000 each mostly drive cost at $300 each for the 26 tb drives and the ssd drives
You can also get it with a N100 for $250 ish
For the price point, you absolutely cannot get anything that even comes close. The nearest thing to compete with it is three times the price the quality is phenomenal. They shipped directly out of China. Mine came Dhl in three days. I immediately purchased another one as a back up and you're talking about the AMD processor is one of the most efficient processors clocking up to 4.5 GHz with a 2000 MHz GPU built-in and only using 15 W. Things I would recommend doing is re-thermal pasting the CPU fan I saw at 20 C drop and temperatures by doing that on both of them.
And for the operating system in my opinion zimma os
And xpnoligy are unbeatable also your not wasting $250 for a unraid license and il add the wave link usb3.0 to 5 GB ethernet adapter. I'm using on both of them and it works perfectly and you can use both 2.5 gb ports on a switch and pull very close to 5 gb I only have 10 gb fiber at my house and airplane hanger wear I keep the second one so I don't need anything faster
I can't see any value in spending the money any company is charging for something close to this before drives with cpu and ram you will pay $1200 or more and you will not get more at all hope this help

Where do you see the AMD version on AliExpress for 310? I only see it for 410 and another for 700.

What's the word for a nas that has 5+ disks and can be setup with dual drive failure redundancy? Synology seems to be the plug and play but I haven't looked in a year or two

Old post, but it should be noted in order to do any sort of hardware transcoding you need to have PlexPass, now if you bought the lifetime pass some time ago great, but if you need it now it's expensive AF. Otherwise you can software transcode with the CPU, and yes the iGPU is considered hardware transcoding.

PlexPass was always a requirement for it. You could use Jellyfin if you don't want to buy the pass. That doesn't change what the hardware is able to do.

I ordered the F4-423. It's basically impossible to find something better at this price. I'll be trying out the Photos replacement Immich.
How has this worked out for you for Immich and whatever else you use it for?

I have needed to order more RAM but it's been reliable. I have it running proxmox for vms and containers with pass-through to TrueNAS. TrueNAS manages the raid and storage pool.
