I've bought 2 terramasters, a 4 bay in 2020 and a 6 bay in 2024 (ended up returning for a 6 bay QNAP). The 4 bay is still working, but buggy.

Terramaster is the price leader in consumer NAS. I've owned netgear, Synology, and now QNAP. I would say all have been more reliable, and better app support than Terramaster. So you get what you pay for.

Any of the 424 ones, that has the latest Intel iGPU that handles the latest 4K transcoding in hardware.

You could also get one of the others for storage, and then a ~$125 Intel N100 mini PC to run Plex and any other services.

A Yugo vs a Mini Cooper.

I put FreeNAS on mine (I think renamed TrueNAS now). It worked until it died about 2 years in and I bought my Synology five years ago, which has received regular and safe updates.

Terramaster customers (on TOS) have had repeated issues with ransomware/malware.

Nevertheless, their cost reflects their qualify.

These are some good deals. I still think lincstations s1 on kickstarter might be better still at 430. (Company is established already even though it's a kickstarter)

I bought a 4-bay one of these a year or so ago. I really like it! I instantly installed a Linux server distro on it rather than their NAS OS so I can't speak much for it. But it's worked great since, no hardware issues

I ordered the F4-423. It's basically impossible to find something better at this price. I'll be trying out the Photos replacement Immich.

My 2nd hand Qnap TS238+ is over 10 years old and they still give me security patches for the OS and apps. Thinking I better replace it before it dies though.

These prices are tempting!

I bought the F4-423 for $367.99 at the beginning of this month from amazon, so this is a pretty solid deal.

If you're a power user, Truenas is a solid OS, but if not, be prepared to spend a few extra $$ on unraid, as the Terramaster OS is borderline bad.

Can't comment on their NAS units

But I had a handful of their 5-Bay DAS units, and the firmware was a disaster. Completely unreliable. Reached out to their "tech support" and received barely legible replies which didn't provide any assistance.

Sold them all on ebay. Surprisingly people snapped them right up, apparently you can sideload your own firmware on it and make it what you need. I didn't have time to play around with it

I got an F4 423 half a year or so ago. Truenas sucks and jail breaking the thing is annoying AF. Took me like 4 or 5 hours. I was in a hurry to get a NAS up so I just built one... in like an hour... using PC parts. I suppose if you're more current on *nix and all this it might be easier, but it ain't no Synology. If anyone wants one of the 423 cheaper than listed here, PM me cuz mine is still sitting on the shelf.

The TerraMaster D6-320 USB Enclosure 6-Bay [newegg.com] $239.99. <-- DAS is a great enclosure I've been using on an Unraid server for about a year now. I picked it up at Amazon for 299 a year ago. VERY tempted to snag another one as it may simplify my backup process.
Update -- I snagged another at this price. $253 with tax and free shipping.
