The drive was USB 3, and previously worked on USB 3 ports. USB3 ports are also backwards compatible with USB2 drives so it made no sense. It just refused to work after sometime on USB3 ports on multiple computers.
This is a very broad assumption. I experienced numerous examples of opposite. The reason could be outdated storage drive chipsets not reflected in USB 3 drivers. I surmise.

Use cases:
Boot USBs (Windows, iOS, Linux, Steamdeck)
Spare data storage to swap/give with friends. I always keep one in my backpack.
Something to throw at people walking by (with a copy of a Rick Ashley video).
