I consider Thief Gold and Thief 2 to be two of the best games ever made.

But, of course, that's having played them when they came out. I can still enjoy them. But it's hard to say if someone playing them for the first time would.

A lot of modern games incorporate stealth into their games. But I think stealth gameplay in most modern games falls short of the stealth in the first two games of the series.

Deadly Shadows was a disappointing sequel (they changed game engines). Although, it has one level called 'The Cradle' I think, that was considered one of the best gaming experiences.

The less said about the most recent Thief game, the better.

The earlier two Thief games can be rough diamonds.

Cons first.
I played Thief II in mid 2000s. The graphics were very dated and blocky then, and would be ancient by today's standards. It turned me off a bit.

Pros:
The main character, Garrett (iirc), is awesome. I was drawn to him, his world, and the level design. This kept me going despite how hard the game was. There were many times I wanted to quit, but the plot propelled me forward.

All in all, these are fun, but I would only recommend if you like stealth games, and has patience to get through them. The secret passages and clues make each level very interesting. But not for anyone looking for a light, easy stealth game.

At the time of their launch, Thief and Thief 2 were absolutely fantastic and are considered classics. But they are from so long ago, I'm not sure how a new player would react to their now extremely outdated graphics. Top tier games from their time. Awesome atmosphere.

I tried to play these a few years back and was turned off by being mouse and keyboard. Wanted to play on Steam Deck but couldn't get the mapping to work.

Love the genre and this series is a classic.
Thief was one of the first games I played on the XBOne and that game was a bug-riddled mess, got to about 95% completion and then the last mission was broken so the game couldn't be finished. Never bothered to go back to see if they patched the game...

Still, for this price it might be worth trying to take another trip down memory lane....
The $6.66 subtotal for all 4 games is a nice touch...

Shalebridge cradle! The setup for the level was awesome! Thoroughly enjoyed playing it, great job raising the hair on your skin to boot.

I really enjoyed Thief (III) Deadly Shadows on the orginal Xbox, one of my all time favorite games.
Now that I will finally have a PC, gonna grab 1 & 2 to see where it all started.
I have the last Thief somewhere in my PS4 back catalog as I got in on the cheap- yet to play it, but I know it got brutal reviews compared to what came before.

There is a fan patch (you can get widescreen and modern resolutions) and texture packs you can install, although the real problem with some of the T1/T2 missions is that the level design is outdated and held back by the engine constraints of the time. Newer fan missions like the recent Black Parade campaign [youtube.com] are absolutely stunning.

There is a patch needed to make Thief: Deadly Shadows work. If you don't install the patch, you can't progress past the first lockpickable door in the tutorial, you're just stuck.

The Thief 2014 game that nobody recommends was a free giveaway on Epic Games last year. So you may already have it, or it may come back in the future since many giveaways are repeated.

Can someone with knowledge of the series explain to me the difference between gold which contains 3 extra maps and definitive which seems to also include the same maps and a few booster packs. Not that its a lot of money but if I buy definitive vs gold is all I am getting:
Booster Pack DLC – Opportunist
Booster Pack DLC – Predator
Booster Pack DLC – Ghost
Thief: Tales From The City digital comic (EN/FR) & OST
Definitive includes only 2 maps:
The Bank Heist bonus mission
The Forsaken challenge map
Any explanation would be greatly appreciated

1000% agree - top 5 game franchise of all time - even including the stinker #4. I do a full play through of 1-3 at least once a year - I just can't help myself. So immersive (still!) and an absolute escape. I consider Red Dead 2 the best single player game of all time and even with Thief 1 (The Dark Project) is damn near *30* years old (1998) is stands right there with RDR2 (in my opinion of course.)

And for any Thief fans out there not aware of the Fan Mission community - there are many fan missions out there, HD mods, etc that modernize the game. Additionally, there are a couple of die-hard fans that spent the last 7 years making an entirely NEW Thief Series called 'The Black Parade'. This is a FULL Thief game with all original story line, missions, and maps. Uses the same engine, sounds, etc - the main character is NOT Garret (the only draw back in my opinion) but I consider this fan-made "Thief 5" 95% as good as the original series. It IS a Fan made mod and it is not stand alone (you need Thief to run it) but it is a fully developed story line and progression towards an end game. I can't recommend the Thief series and this new Thief The Black Parade enough!

The booster packs apply to Thief (4) and expand your arrow capacity and give you arrows, etc (instead of earning/buying in the game.) I never got any of those packs (I didn't need them in the game and it didn't change anything.) The challenge map and Bank Heist maps are simply "bonus" maps for Thief (extra stand alone missions made by Eidos i.e. not fan missions.)
The digital comic is exactly what it says it is - just a digital comic based on the game.

Buying the full franchise and all DLC on Steam is really really cheap so really no harm in just dropping down the $10 or $15 as you wont be disappointed either way. That's on Steam - on GOG the games are like <$1 !! and you're not tied to the Steam ecosystem (GOG lets you download full stand alone DRM free installations of the games so even if GOG disappears you still have the games.)
