There is a good deal of bass but I find the mids and lows to be somewhat boxy and and the lows a bit boomy. There are several sound settings, (vocal, news, music, movies) and it seems like the "news" or "music" settings to me are the best setting without too much bass.
BTW the woofers are on the bottom of the bar, which IMO further hampers the bass when on a shelf. So although the soundbar has feet that lift it up 1/4" off the table, I'd recommend elevating it an inch or two off the table with spacers or something (that's what I did), or even wall mounting it.
If this speaker were for me, it's not bad, but I might not keep it. But it's only $63 and it's for a friend on a budget, so they can decide for themselves. But is it a good buy, a soundbar for a measly $60? I'd say so.
Edit: What the heck, based on comments in this thread and the Yamaha thread, I just ordered the $50 Brandsmart Yamaha refurb. Let's do a head-to-head! (hopefully Friday)

From what I can tell, the JBL does not have a subwoofer-out should you decide you want more bass vs the Yamaha that does.
