Best "cheap" "non-gaming" computer, I have ever owned. I always felt it ironic that I have to recommend a mac to regular people in this price range... nothing in the market can match its price/performance ratio in this tiny form factor. My only gripe is this base model should have had at least 512 GB internal storage. But I guess third party SSD replacements offer 2 TB upgrades for $250 ish bucks. I have a USB4 enclosure with a 4 TB 990 Evo connected to it though. Extremely happy with this beautiful product.

I'm scandalized that no one is else is scandalized about 256 storage.
For $500 you'd be hard pressed to find a better performing PC in a compact case. The least expensive Dell desktop is $550 right now. It does have 250GB more storage but only an i5 proc., no Thunderbolt 4 and I don't know how many X times bigger footprint.

1TB Crucial X9 external 1TB SSD is like $70 these days if you need more basic storage. And if you need fast storage better to buy an internal SSD and TB 4 enclosure -- massively less expensive than Apple storage prices.

This is a great "bang for the buck" powerful machine for entry level. The "missing" 250GB of storage is not something I could get upset about at this price. It's hardly what I'd call a scandal. Now Apple only including 8GB in some base models for years up until now -- that was a scandal.

Normal price but still great value. Still using my M1 mini (with 16GB) and I'm not sure I'll need to upgrade for the next decade. Solid machine.
Well, it's normal sale price. But normal price is $599. The only store I've seen that regularly sells it for $499 is Micro Center but they are far and few between for many people.

Attached a 1TB external SSD to the one I bought for my sister and has been extremely fast, worked perfectly with Time Machine, etc.

No, people just get a hard on when they have an opportunity to hate on Apple products

It's excellent marketing for Apple though, their products always have the most engagement in the comment section, and engagement is $$$$
Do you troll the Internet forums looking for an opportunity to type "hard on" ?

I upgraded to the 512 24/RAM version since my last OS was nearly 200GB on intensive software alone. (sucks it's only 10% off now when i checked)
Running time machine off a USBC-3.2 drive and data off a TB drive.

That 256GB is good enough if you don't use programs that take a lot of memory. But stuff like Lightroom (8GB), Creative Suite (16gb), Maya (8GB) can add up. While Mac upgrades tend to need around 40GB available for upgrade. My PS Remote Play gets choppy at times as well.

I agree with everything you said. Plus Win 11 and Linux also run great on this thing using UTM and I've heard good things about running LLM because of the unified memory. I hooked up an older Sandisk usb3 external that was gathering dust and even that is fast enough to do 99% of tasks.

This is a great way to dip your toe into Mac for cheap.

I upgraded from an i5 mini to this one, and WOW what an upgrade. This is truly an excellent bang for the buck. One of the unexpected joys with this M4 is how easy I can play with LLM's on it. Free program called "LM Studio" let's you download hundreds of various LLMs to run on your own box. Cool stuff. I also have a gaming PC with a 4070 and the M4 performs the LLM stuff as fast as the 4070. Impressive.

Never had a Mac mini before so I'm curious, right out of the box, there is no mouse/keyboard, do I have to have a wired keyboard/mouse in order to set up the wireless keyboard/mouse??

My experience says "yes" on the 3x Mac Min M2 we own, but we use cheap 3rd party bluetooth keyboards/mouses.
Best computer I've ever owned. Paid $400/each for our M2s. I'm likely going to upgrade these to the M4, primarily to double the RAM to 16gb.

I understand foks like Apple, but this miniPC has a faster CPU:

https://www.amazon.com/Beelink-PC...r=8-9&th=1

It also has upgradable RAM and NVME, but it comes with 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB NVME.

It is more upgradable, but its CPU isn't necessarily faster. Even when cherry picking one of the better benchmarks for the SER8 [geekbench.com] (which as an aside requires Linux for best results, the scores taken using Windows are consistently significantly lower) comes out behind the base M4 Mini [geekbench.com].

Another thing to consider is that the Mini has no external power brick - its PSU is internal, so it only needs an AC cord, unlike the SER8. The Mini is also almost certainly the quieter of the two even at max load.
