Both are about the same price unless you live in a relatively small selection of locations.

I just went to their website and I'm fairly impressed with what it can handle. The only thing giving my pause is the audit defense is not included. An additional $20 up charge. I suppose if you have a simple return without much complexity that's a moot point. I just like the peace of mind if someday the IRS ever comes knocking.

I haven't tried to print before filing, but FreeTaxUSA doesn't upcharge for anything even remotely like that and they don't need to hide the forms since federal is free. Once you pay for state, you can also see the state forms. You do have access to everything after April 15th and no issue to file an extension. I think you can't e-file after October 15th, but that's an IRS rule I believe.

You can always sign up and play around with all the federal stuff for free.

Like every thing else, inflation. $22 was a good deal, wasn't worth waiting for $5 or so. Next year best probably will be $25.

My $21 H&R does my federal and state and electronically files federal. All I have to do is print and mail the state. For the "free" one, you don't get an option to prepare the state without paying for the filing.

And I would rather work in a dedicated program than some web interface.

I got tired of the games Newegg was playing so I bought it on ebay. Newegg lost my business for being greedy. Freetax may Efile your fed for free but only after you pay $15 to Efile the state from what I saw so I quit. They asked for my credit card before I could even access my fed return. Apparently you cannot just Efile the fed alone. If I am wrong somebody chime in.

Totally agree. I felt FreeTax was not as accessible to my return forms.

That's still $21 + $5 to mail + hassle of printing state return.
Do you consider that about the same as $15 FreeTaxUSA fee that electronically files both federal and state?

As far as web interface vs dedicated program that's your thing. I would rather prefer not to waste my time booting up VM to install their shitty software that requires tons of other software to be installed to work and even software to print to pdf. What is this 1995? Oh wait, that's what H&R Block printer addon is called - pdf95 lol.

You are not going me to convince to use H&R Block. I have been using it for 10+ years back when it was free. I have done the xml hack to make it free. I'm done with their price games.
