The best surival kit is the one you have on you in a survival situation. This is small enough to slip in a side pocket of your day pack in case you get lost on a hike (the most likely survival scenario I personally can imagine). I already have a much more capable micro survial kit, but this would be a good foundation for anyone seeking a bit of peace of mind, but doesn't want to lug around a heavy, fully featured kit on every time they go on a day hike.

Personally, I'd forego the "emergency water" for an unopened bottle of spring water: more hydration, plus a reusable container to store and carry found water. That could slip in another pocket of your day pack and free up some space in this survival kit. I'd fill that unused space with a bit more food: a few nutrition bars like Clif, Kind, etc and maybe some hard candies. Rotate then out every year or so if you're worried about them expiring. Ditto for the bottled water if you're really paranoid.

Toss in a small headlamp, spare batteries, a Bic mini butane lighter, some cordage (paracord, bank line, etc), a small knife and maybe some water purification tablets. That'll give you a much more capable kit that still light and unobtrusive enough to permanently live in your day pack. Not sure I'd trust that tiny button compass embedded in the closure buckle, so maybe add a small orienteering compass (Suunto is a quality name but even an off brand compass of this type would be miles better).

Plus, use your head: make sure someone knows your planned hike, route and anticipated finish time. And if you get lost: stay put!
