For those paranoid about privacy: the OEM is located in China, thus must comply with the national security law there. This means that they must hand over your data upon the request of Chinese government. I know most of us are just small fish. But if you really care about privacy, you may want to learn about this. That being said, the hardware looks good and you can potentially install open source software instead of the oem's OS.

What I learned from the product reviews is that people who received the product for free from Amazon Vine are big fans.

I'm a Viner and my reviews are impartial, regardless of getting it "for free". I love my DXP4800 Plus.

You're right that the gov of your own country has the ability to cause more harm to you than foreign gov. I think it makes a lot of sense for Americans to use software and services provided by European countries (if quality is the same), because they're different jurisdiction. Proton Mail, and many other good stuff. However, that doesn't mean it's safe to hand over the control of your NAS and data to North Korea. In the age of Internet, they can also do a lot of harm to you with your data in hand.
Thanks for mentioning the European alternatives!

Synology needs to get with the times. Even their brand new NAS are out-of-date. They never had any real competition, so they got to comfortable taking all our money. They are overpriced. Synology is only king because they were the only real player in the game for a long time.

Do yourself a favor and build or get a different brand.

For those that purchased this item through B&H photo - did it come in a brown ugreen box with the actual product box within it, or just the product box (and of course a shipping box).

Thanks!
