For those paranoid about privacy: the OEM is located in China, thus must comply with the national security law there. This means that they must hand over your data upon the request of Chinese government. I know most of us are just small fish. But if you really care about privacy, you may want to learn about this. That being said, the hardware looks good and you can potentially install open source software instead of the oem's OS.

What I learned from the product reviews is that people who received the product for free from Amazon Vine are big fans.

I'm a Viner and my reviews are impartial, regardless of getting it "for free". I love my DXP4800 Plus.

You can! Using docker. I have the 4800 Plus and it's great. This CPU isn't the "best" for transcoding but gets the job done. If you're going to be using direct play for your content, I'd go for it.
It can transcode 4 4k streams for me. It's pretty good at it.

You can get an arc 310 (I think) graphics card for around 100 bucks. I did and it fits in the unit and works pretty good for transcoding. I don't see any heavy CPU usage anymore.

I thought the onboard GPU on the N100 could do hardware transcoding too?

I have a QNAP NAS right now and I don't like the software, I also have a n100 based pc that runs a proxmox ve. If i was buying again right now, I would get a 4 or 8 bay version of this.

Almost year ago got 6-bay on their Kickstarter, about twice cheaper.
6-bay because of CPU. Still using yet only 2 HDD slots.
Moved from Synology because of their poor processors and very slow online access through their servers (which seem to be the issue for any NAS brand).
But software-wise Synology is definitely the best still.
Hopefully UGREEN will polish their software.

Yes, I am still using Synology 418play for photo storage and Ugreen 4800+ for movies.

Is there anything that doesn't have this problem?

You have to understand that the legal system and legal practice are very different there than the West. They can search you without a warrant or just rubber-stamp a warrant. For example, if you use WeChat, your chat isn't end to end encrypted, and can be automatically flagged for any content they don't like (including non China accounts). They can also access your chat without warrant, just use the legally built backdoor. Here in the US, a warrant is a must. Plus, end to end encryption is almost universal in chat apps. Citizen Lab in University of Toronto has a series of studies on the privacy side of WeChat, if anyone is curious.

You're paying for the software ultimately. Go with Synology.

I used to be a Vine contributor, and I was determined to not be those people. I tell you, it's work! Got tired of trying to be thorough with my reviews. A lot of stuff is crap. Gave up my Vine gold status as I got tired of having to work when I got home from work. . .

And you wouldn't be happy getting something for free and only having to pay the tax on it?

It's not like Vine members are required to leave positive reviews.

They're just meeting their quota.

EDIT: Jealous much?
You really got ratio'd with this one!
