For those paranoid about privacy: the OEM is located in China, thus must comply with the national security law there. This means that they must hand over your data upon the request of Chinese government. I know most of us are just small fish. But if you really care about privacy, you may want to learn about this. That being said, the hardware looks good and you can potentially install open source software instead of the oem's OS.
What I learned from the product reviews is that people who received the product for free from Amazon Vine are big fans.
I'm a Viner and my reviews are impartial, regardless of getting it "for free". I love my DXP4800 Plus.

Synology has refused to upgrade their cpus for who knows why. They should be on sale but arent.

I got one of these in December and i still haven't bought hard drives for it because they've been so expensive. They all seem to take ssds though so i might just start there and migrate when drives get cheaper.

I've been happy with mine as an early backer. Paid for it although cheaper as an early backer.

I put 2 used enterprise class HGST drives and 2 new Toshiba drives. Running really good. Especially with the 2 2.5Gbe ports with SMB multi-channel enabled.

Synology only recently upgraded a bunch of their NAS with a single 2.5Gbe port but they are still using celeron CPUs.

The only drawback I see is that the N100 CPU on mines is very warm. The heatsink on it is tiny but some had success applying better thermal paste and getting 5-10 degrees C less.

I like the fact that they keep adding features and are actively developing the OS and apps. It's been less than a year though so I don't know when software support will slow and eventually stop. They just released 2 more models with better CPUs but for AI stuff. Like using AI on device to organize your files/photos.
On reddit people discussed how to change up the heatsink or at least the pad and got the temps to drop.

Synology needs to get with the times. Even their brand new NAS are out-of-date. They never had any real competition, so they got to comfortable taking all our money. They are overpriced. Synology is only king because they were the only real player in the game for a long time.

Do yourself a favor and build or get a different brand.

I have the DXP4800 Plus model and have been very pleased with the performance so far. I have about half of a 44TB setup filled with no issues at all to report...

They are good enough for what their target customers need - above average tech savvy consumers and small businesses. Neither group really need 2.5G, high res/bitrate transcoding, nor run 20 instances of VM's.
Their software is great, hardware spec is just okay, security and service is decent compared to QNAP. I don't really know how Asus or Terramaster is, and Buffalo or WD users seem rather not very vocal...
a friends said UGreen (he was a backer) was buggy AF, and mentioned service is subpar - but supposedly both are better now but not at Synology or even QNAP level.
Also, I dunno how many looking for 2 bay NAS on sale would really spend money on 2.5GbE switch and NIC's or run enough dockers to need 8GB of RAM?

If you are even slightly tech savvy, then just build a NAS from an old retired desktop PC that you may plan to trash. Just add 4-6 HDD and put OpenMediaVault or TrueNAS etc on a USB stick and lo behlod you have a NAS. It may not be the best to transcode 4K etc. But it may fit your needs for a good reliable, cheap NAS.

NAS noob here. If I have a mini desktop with like a modern day CPU and good integrated GPU wouldnt be better at transcoding that any of these prebuilts? Something like a 8845HS?

Almost all home routers are made in China.

As somebody who bought the 6 bay one on kickstarter I too like it. The OS is not as good as Synology but the hardware is miles ahead though. The OS is good enough and you can always get TruNas or something else if you really dislike the stock OS.

Imo What matters is who designed the software that controls the behavior, and what laws and principles they follow.

This is irrelevant because they do not have your data, you do, in your home, on your server. If you're paranoid, install your own OS.
