The regular price is inflated. You can get the same NAS with 2x 6TB Red plus at Westerndigital for $649 regular price. There are 15% educational discount and 5% cashback available making it cheaper than this. I got the NAS alone for below $380 with the discount.

I ended up installing truenas on a nvme drive on the qnap due to multiple security issues. I am not networking pro, so for now it is working great as smb storage within my wifi network

Qnap's 2 bay option is normally very expensive compared to other vendors, e.g. Synology or Ugreen, it's almost like they don't even want to be in that space. So at standard prices of $440 + $100(x2) for the drives, this isn't a bad deal. But like you said if you hunt around you can find discounts (not everyone can get the educational discount mind you), that make this a kind of meh deal.

IMO, if I wanted a 2bay NAS (new), for some reason, I'd go with Ugreen, Synology has pissed me off with their branded HD requirement, but if you don't need much CPU power to do things and just want extra storage there's plenty of other options for WAY cheaper, from Qnap, Synology, etc.

You must be very bored to reply to a deal post from months ago. I have owned 5 QNAP NAS after using a couple other brands in the pass 20 years. 3 of my QNAP NAS are still in service.
