I bought the 8.8 pound bag from Amazon, before the sale, it's really dirty stuff. My tank is 20 gallons. I put a 2 inch coarse sand cap over it. That's another 20 pounds. The sand tends to fall through the fluval with the overall look a combination of black fluval and light sand. Messy looking.
My plants, helped by root tabs, are doing well.
If I was starting over, I would use just sand, and skip stem plants. I've glued on Anubis and Java fern to driftwood. They feed through the water column, not the roots. They look great.

BTW Petco 17.6lb for $25.52 looks slicker if you need that much soil.
