I remember how GARMIN treated Dixie from homemade wanderlust YouTube fame…. I don't remember the specifics except GARMIN essentially tried to give one of the most known hikers the runaround….. shame on GARMIN and that was stupid AF.

From my understanding, the big thing is that these things can automatically ping your location and update it on Garmin servers every so often.

Also, my experience with Apple messaging using satellite has been less than ideal. It seems like they're receiving person needs to manually select send via satellite in order for a message to be sent back to the person who is in a remote location. My family had no problems receiving my sat text messages from my iPhone , but I didn't actually get them back until I had cell phone service again due to that.

Yes and no. My cell phone battery has a relatively short life, my phone is relatively delicate, and I would never trust just one item when it is so easy to carry two. I carry the larger version of this (with built in mapping) for redundancy and to have breadcrumbs that can be viewed on an online map. It gives people at home peace of mind. I do solo offroading in very remote locations, in a 30 year old British SUV - think 2 days hike from civilization if I break down. Finally, Garmin offers S&R insurance attached to my comms plan that means I won't be on the hook for the helicopter bill if it comes to that.
