This movie got me into anime! The violence and gore are great, but it does have a SA scene which may be awkward to watch in some company. This movie doesn't seem to hold anything back. I do appreciate the hand drawn era of anime. The last visually impressive anime I watched was Blood Blockade Battlefront, but I bet it's CGI.
great movie
One of the best '90s movies.

Exactly

That scene makes it difficult for me to watch it except late at night when everyone is asleep since I have a family now

"There is a known issue with this disc that the manufacturer will not acknowledge. this disc will not play in most Panasonic Blu-ray players or Samsung or Xbox one. And some Sony's. It didn't work on my Panasonic or on my Sony but it did work on my PlayStation 5 and my backup Blu-ray player Sekai. I found two other people in a forum that had the same issue and they were offered no solutions I emailed them and they told me the same thing. If you have a Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, or Xbox one to play movies don't bother buying this The manufacturer will not help you. My guess is there is a flaw in the programming or coding of the disc and they would have to remake it before they could republish it and they refuse to do that So avoid this disc if you have any doubts or the above brands"

this can't be understated. i'm open to movies with heavy content but this was a little much for me. and it's basically the opening scene.

You may have opened Pandora's Box with this request!
When you say something similar, what do you mean?
Artwork (Hand drawn vs CGI?)
Genre (Samurai)
Tone (Serious/Dark)
Series vs movie
Some people recommended Vampire Hunter D (classic and a favorite that I grew up on) and Wicked City (dark, with more spicy scenes than Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D combined.)
The world of Anime is QUITE vast. And at the risk of thread crapping, I am obligated to help another anime seeker in their quest to find more anime.
Please skip to the next post for the words ahead are literally incessant rambling that have nothing to do with OP deal (which is good enough for me to be in for 1 btw.)
General recommendations. Fist of the North Star, Berserk (the 1997 version please,) Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Anime that fall much closer to your "something similar to this"
Sword of the Stranger - great sword fight choreography.
Dororo - same general period (Dark Feudal Japan,) with supernatural elements.
Basilisk - Samurai/Ninja Anime series. I'm personally not a big fan but I know it to be very, VERY similar to Ninja Scroll.
Blade of the Immortal - sort of a "if Deadpool was a samurai" but darker, and without the humor.
Honorable mention - Gantz. I love and hate the series. No samurai, but very serious and dark. A fair number of gratuitous spicy scenes. I found myself very caught up with this series; BUT it never truly ended. No closure. No real conclusion. Also, do NOT get attached to ANYONE in this series. It's very "Game of Thrones" where the characters are actually in danger.

Probably can't go all the wrong to throw in Akame Ga Kill, and Parasyte in all this. Do be doubly and triply warned that in asking for "similar" anime; none of these recommendations really have what you would call "Happy" endings (if you get closure at all.)

Thank you very much for the recommendations. Ninja scroll and sword of the stranger are probably my favorite anime of all time. I will check the ones you mentioned out. Thanks again
