77-year-old boomer here who started playing games on a Commodore 64. I'm still gaming with my favorites now being Diablo IV, Civ 7 and Helldivers 2. I spend about 25 hours a week gaming, not enough to be considered hardcore in any of these games, but I still enjoy my time with the PC games - never got into console gaming though. I am maybe a unicorn as I don't have any friends close to my age that enjoy gaming. FWIW, I love the Serious Sam series of games and played them all. :-)
I never understood late 90's / early 2000's FPS's (or ones inspired by the era) being called "boomer shooters." 99% of the people playing OG boomer shooters had PARENTS that were 'boomers,' they weren't baby boomers themselves. More like gen x shooter or older millennial shooter. Heck, I am technically a millennial and was playing Doom 1 and Wolfenstein 3D near their release.

Everyone over the age of 35 is a "boomer" apparently.

Is the title's "boomer" a reference to firepower or the older generation that got it most easy for real estate, careers, & practical purchase power, but they (incorrectly) think they are the best of the best? Very few boomers play video games. Nearly all boomers think video games are a waste of time.
Boomers prefer to spend their super valuable time by sitting on the couch, eating potato chips, & watching the TV's sports games, Fox News or CNN, & whatever TV series & movies. Boomers need the assistance of their lazy & stupid children & grandchildren to use a smart TV, surf the Internet on any computer device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, & desktop), use the email, shop online, & avoid Internet scams. Boomers would be overwhelmed by stupid video games. Boomers strongly prefer to slowly play card games, board games, chess, checkers, & golf.
The generation that really got into video games is the millennials (aka, Gen Y). A small minority of Gen X are into video games.
This is the best post ever and so true but you did call me lazy and stupid (perhaps yourself, too) so that kind of stings but the rest checks out. Your incessant use of the ampersand however is amusing yet concerning.

The older generation that 'got it easy' fought in Vietnam (55,000 killed or MIA), waited in line for gas on even or odd days depending on their license plate, endured relentless riots, and witnessed the Decade of Assassinations.
Along the way, they were treated to unprecedented innovation including the space travel, personal computer, the internet and world wide web (no they are not the same), cell phones, GPS, digital cameras, video games, microwave ovens, satellite TV, fiber optics, search engines, translators, and video games. All of these things dramatically improved communication and spurred more innovation.
In a day when people searched for things on the internet using Archie and Veronica, uuencoded and uudecoded files, and moved files using sneakernet, a company called ID Software released a game called Doom which was primarily distributed over the internet and included technology to allow people on different computers to play together.
Just the same, I would think that Boomers would mostly be associated with the games that filled arcades in the 70s and the home arcades that recreated this experience in the living room. Serious Sam did not arrive until 2001 and I've never heard of the others.
More importantly, if you like the games or want to try something new, humble bundles represent great value -- regardless of your age.

My dad still plays Doom II mods on Xbox. He's in his 60s.

Yep, I'm a "lazy & stupid" millennial who plays video games. I'm being sarcastic. There are actually science studies showing that playing video games requires far more mental activity than being a couch potato in front of the TV. Over the long-term, people who play video games, read books, & interact with other people (regular socializing & multiplayer video games) have lower rates of dementia than people who watch TV shows & movies.

My mom played video games for much of her life, she just passed away but was 73. My only point is that age group wasn't making up the lion's share of the "boomer shooter" market nor still is. Look at any market share study done by the video game industry and you won't find "old" people (quoting solidbake) shoving out any other age range.
Age Group Proportion Number of Gamers
Under 18s 20% 618 million
18-34 years 38% 1.17 billion
35-44 years 14% 433 million
45-54 years 12% 371 million
55-64 years 9% 278 million
65+ years 7% 216 million

Boomer just means old
Per Google AI: "Boomer" is slang for a baby boomer, a generation spanning roughly 1946-1964, and the phrase "OK Boomer" is used to dismiss or mock outdated or conservative opinions, often in a humorous or sarcastic way.
Now, you can use it anyway you want to but most of us know Sharon Valerii is the only boomer that truly matters....even if she was a Cylon.

Sad thing is dude probably needs to call back his "boomer" parents for financial aid every time Netflix comes due...he just can't swing that $16 bill even if he is sharing an 600 square foot apartment with 4-5 other people who also think they'll become full time Tiktok personalities.
