Non-inverters are on and off machines. They always draw the maximum current. Either they are on or off. Every time the compressor turns on, it also affects other appliances because they have to use huge current to kick start the compressor. They maintain the desired temperature by turning off and on. No way to tell the compressor to just run at 25% to maintain desired temperature.
On the other hand, the inverter compressor versions is adjustable. It can draw as low as 100w just to maintain the desired temperature setting. I have this AC but with heater and by average, it draws 200-400w blowing just the right amount of cold air. If it's too hot, or you put it to maximum compressor speed and full fan speed, it can draw up to 1300w.

In contrast, with a dual hose unit, one hose is used to draw hot air from the room while the other is used to vent hot air outside.
Another energy measurement is the Coefficient of Performance (COP). It measures the ratio of cooling output against the amount of energy consumed. Dual hose portable air conditioners tend to have a higher COP than single hose units, again, making them more energy-efficient.
Dual hose units tend to use less power than single hose units do to achieve the same cooling effect. This is because they're better at venting hot air out of the room and, in turn, reducing the amount of energy they need to cool any given space.
of course considering this, if hose is inside a hose, it would need insulation to keep the heat from transferring to the cooler hose, and it would make more sense to have 2 separate hoses....
A single hose unit circulates room air over the evaporator to cool and pushes room air over the condenser and out of the exhaust to vent the heat.
The main difference between the two is that the single hose unit creates mildly negative pressure indoors which tends to pull warmer air in from the outside. That means it's partially counterproductive. It's not a scam. It's just not as efficient.
This unit is dual hose however, so I'm not sure why it even came up here, other than that this site has a tendency to rehash the same topics over and over again.
I've had trouble with refurbed portable air conditioners having a vinegar smell when it was blowing, and haven't been able to find any info online aside from a "smelly sock" issue which people attribute to mold and bacteria growth in the condenser. As long as this unit cools the room some amount and doesn't smell bad, the price is hard to beat.

I actually had mine mounted through an unused dog door. I put a piece of plywood to fit the dog door opening and cut out the template for the hose. It worked great.
It's been a few years but also from my recollection I bought it refurbished from Walmart and it came in brand new condition. I thought the vendor was Walmart supposed to Midea but I don't recall.
You can also buy hose extenders and perhaps add-on to the existing two hoses so you're able to run them out vertically and therefore not have to open your window as much. you still need to seal the top though.
The one thing that would make this even better is if it also had heat - a HiSense unit that I own has it, and it makes it also useful over the winter. Sure, price would be higher and maybe Floridians would not need it. The rest of us would.
It appears to be the same model. However, some of the reviews mention "heat" and this unit does not have heat. This leads me to believe Madea or whoever repurposed this Amazon page from an older model to this one.
That said, the installation video clearly shows it comes with a horizontal sliding window adapter. My concern is that the video is for another (similar) unit since the color is black.
And I cannot find this model anywhere else online...so if it does not come with a sliding window adapter highly doubtful we'll be able to find one online.

But you are right, people should avoid single hose porta-AC.
I wish this has heater to make it an all year round machine. I want to buy a 2nd one but with heater. Still a good deal though for a dual hose.
