Does anyone have an opinion on the RS422+ vs. the RS822RP+?

Both are on sale (with toshiba drives) and I have 1U available in my rack. My needs are modest, but the fixed 2GB ram in the RS422+ worries me and doesn't seem particularly future-proof.

Asking for clarification: Do you mean at normal MSRP or do you mean released on sale?

Check out the NAScompares channel on YouTube, he's likely done a deep drive on that model with transcoding tests in Plex, and you can also learn what's new on the incoming 2025 models (basically just 2.5GbE)

I'm a newbie on-site data hoarder (previously had everything on the cloud, but now wanting to go back to localized file access), so appreciate a starting point. Thank you!

I have this exact NAS and it works great for my Plex server and as a photo backup replacement instead of paying Google. I recommend it, but I've already outgrown the 2 bays in a little over a year, FYI

While it's a good price for Synology, remember DS224+ comes with 2 GB. According to synology: Upgrade the memory capacity to a minimum of 4 GB to acquire the object recognition feature.

For those interested in getting synology to move from cloud photo storage systems like iCloud or Google Photos and retain object and face recognition, you can check this list:

How do you use the 5 bay configuration? I thought for most uses 4 bay would be perfect, coupled with a 2 bay remote site. I wanted to get 4 bay that's configured 2:2, meaning 4TB+4TB will show as 4TB, and I will have another 4+4 for showing as 4TB for local storage etc, and additional 2 x 4TB configured as 4+4, backing up each one of the raids above off site. What do you think?

Defiantly no release on sale but I think they will keep the same MSRP as current model but with powerful cpu and 2.5Gbps lan.

Did you upgrade the ram, and can you let us know how well object/face recognition works? I really want to get this done because the online storage I've been paying yearly still did not implement face recognition and it's driving me crazy.

Ahh wow I maybe would have bought this for this price if this deal was a week ago. Bought a GMKTec mini PC NAS for about 300$ but it came with 2tb SSD and 8gb ram. Pretty satisfied with that, although took some setup to get it to where I needed it (ok mainly a lot of research on what OS to use). But this deal seems pretty solid for those looking for a NAS.
