Amazon Basics mechanics 145 piece set is $58 -- as an alternative. i've had mixed experience with craftsman. some are great. some not.

It's tough to look at these newer sets compared with my vintage Craftsman ratchets from the 70's. For one, they had metal gears not plastic and for another, they had a feature you never see any more, finger tighteners. The ratchets have a knurled dial on top that let you rotate the bolts with your fingertips to help them get started or just tighten them by feel all while using the same tool!
I know HF sells just something similar but they're individual items and none have them incorporated into the ratchets... pity

In for 1. I needed a set of tools and this is a good price. Sucks to hear the quality of the ratchets dropped but even still, for the price, I can deal with it. Thanks OP.

I received it yesterday. While not the same quality my dad used to get, this is a solid set of tools for the price. I wish it had more wrenches. I'll still need to get some pliers, mallet and hammer. The box is pretty decent too.
