Same as others, I have a bunch of these nearing end of life. I'd prefer not to spend hundreds of dollars on another orphaned Nest product that is supposed to last for 10 years. But I also don't see a good alternative out there.

There are some no name smart smoke detectors, but smoke detectors aren't something you trust to a no name brand.

Well, right before google officially discontinued the nest protect, I bought 11 of them .. going around like 4 walmarts checking all serial #s before buying. I got all manufacturing date as 2023.

Does this mean, my nest will stop working? In terms of app notifications and such.

I also integrated these with my home assistant so that worries me too

I picked up some from ebay cheap with newer expiration as the 2 I had now expire this year. These will last me til 2030 and I am only out $50 total. I see no reason for them not to continue to work until then at which I hope there will be something better on the market by then.
I really tried to find a replacement for them with no luck. The pathlight is extremely nice and there is virtually nothing out there that has that or presence sensing that I found. Also like have HA integration. Sadly these seem like one of a kind with the feature set so hopefully someday something else comes along

There is a disclaimer from Google at the top of the page:
Nest Protect price is discounted to reflect inventory aging that may result in less than 10 years of remaining sensor life.

It is the sensor for carbon monoxide detection (same with any other CO detector). I just purchased some (battery) since they are discontinued, with mfg date of August 2023.

I suppose after the sensor dies it can be used for just smoke/fire, and just add CO detectors, or possibly replace a couple with the new First Alert. Wouldn't have been good idea if Google made two different models? Well now they make 0 models, so I guess that's a bust…

I have quite a few of these in my home. Looking to change to another brand that's similar (if possible)…anyone have any recommendations?
First Alert has a pre-order on their site on the new model that will be compatible with Nest/Google

They don't have the path light feature, which is one of the most innovative features of the whole thing. Basically killing off a product with solid features to be replaced with one with less features that is marginally cheaper but not enough to make replacing the expired ones relatively cheap.

Combination greed and planned obsolescence. And for what?

It's unfortunate as I always feel I end up getting products that get discounted.

This time, when I started buying these, they were the best ones out there and they were not cheap. In the past, I have purchased a product that would be similar to, something but cheaper and that product would get discounted.

Figured with it being Nest, great features, and a higher enterprise and product it would continue. Nope.

Tempted but with the new model having an expected MSRP of $129 I'll wait.

This 10 year is a bit overblown. It's only because that's how long the sensor in it is effective for. It's the materials that go bad and any co detectors are like that and some are even less.

I had these. These are such a nightmare, especially the ones that are battery. Once it disconnects from Wi-Fi, it's super hard to get it to reconnect. It's crazy. I'll never buy another one again

I wish Google would stop killing stuff.

It's hard to trust any of their series/lines to be around for a long time.
