No doubt, I personally pulled the trigger on the M4 at launch but haven't been following prices much. Figured I'd post in case anyone was still looking

8GB is okay for a high school student or someone who just needs to browse the web, do light work. Laptop will last them a long time

How are the screens on m3 or m4 MBA compared to MBP? I have an m1pro and prior to that I had an intel MBA and to me the screen was horrible. Looking not for specs but people who have actually seen them side by side. I've been checking out the new OLED windows laptops for $500 with the new Intel proc and the screen on those are very nice, and BL issues seem to have been solved. For half the price I am interested.

Your right, It is for the specs. The upgrade prices are offensive and foolish for business imo. But I won't use anything but apple stuff personally because of how long it lasts and how much I like the software.
I still use a top spec MacBook Pro 15" 2013 and it runs excellent. Use latest macOS with open core legacy patcher.
Window laptops, Amazon fire sticks, and android phones do not last like Apple stuff does.

Went from 14"MBP to 13" M4 MBA base. First few days--hated the downgraded screen and almost returned it. Forced myself to wait a week and then got used to it. It's by far a step down from OLED or the MBP mini-LEDs. Take it for a test drive during the return period to see if it's "good enough" for the price you pay. I decided ultimately that it was.
