For anyone on a 12 or 16 core and deciding between 9800x3d vs 9950x3d for gaming.

The 9800x3d will work its 98% best every time without any changes to configurations in bios or windows. (The 2% being the extra bios settings).

However the 9950x3d may require custom game configuration changes. And potentially "process lasso" to force it to use only the first 8 cores and no hyperthreading in order to force the cores to go the highest without thermal throttle on ccd0 .

The benefit here is that the extra 8 cores will allow you to do things in the background that are process intensive, for extra streaming add-ons, extra communication apps, or pretty much anything at all. And to top it off.

Having the 8 cores and hyper threads on allows small task background processes to chime in passively without effecting gameplay. But that extra set of steps is the only way to achieve the same game performance while keeping all the cores and threads enabled.

Otherwise you just turn on turbo mode and it disables 8 cores and all hyper threads for you in the bios. But... you might as well get 9800x3d if you're gonna do that

Fortunately this isn't the case. I went from 9950x to x3d version. Redownloaded the chipset drivers…..I could see core parking working immediately

The burning question seems to be, "have you enabled EXPO in the BIOS or not?"

Legit curious.

I got the MSI B550 Tomahawk as the bundle when I built mine. 9800 x3d, B550 Tomahawk, 7900XT Hellhoud card. Runs literally anything I throw at it at 1440p 120hz. It is not a high end board, but it has been stable after flashing bios and no issues.
Cyberpunk was the only thing that was limited, and that was by the graphics card.

With all the negative news around this cpu I'll pass for now and wait when drops a lot lower
Yeah, there are several hundred reports of these CPUs dying now, and not just on ASrock motherboards, and this is the second generation in a row AMD has had issues with X3D chips failing/burning. Last gen was able to be resolved after a few months with BIOS updates, but that doesnt guarantee it's the same situation this time.
AMD is claiming these 'dead' CPUs are from memory compatibility issues, but that doesnt explain why a good chunk of failures result in physical burn damage.
Anyways, at this point its hard to recommend these CPUs because AMD clearly isnt taking responsibility and it will be an awful situation trying to replace dead chips under warranty as AMD is pointing the finger at users', telling them to change RAM, motherboard, update BIOS instead of replacing the defective CPUs.

Huh? I've been seeing countless Reddit reports of AMD processing RMA reports with no issues at all. They may not have the correct issue pinned down (memory compatibility) entirely, but they're still accepting RMA for dead cpus with little push back, unless something has changed within the last couple days. A lot of the RMA issues came before they acknowledged the issue of defective and/or dead chips.

I own the 9950x3d and this isn't how it works anymore. You have to make sure you have the latest bios/chipset, windows gamebar turned on, windows power plan set to balanced and it works automatically if you've done all of that. A common mistake is that if you install the chipset driver before updating the bios, a reinstall of the chipset drivers (recommend revo for uninstall) should fix it. Every game I've tested so far, 20+ mainstream titles, the non-3dcache ccd parks just fine with no user interaction needed. Further, the extra cores (the parked CCD) do absolutely nothing while you have a game selected as the active window. As soon as you click out of the game window they wake back up. So essentially, while you're gaming, you have a slightly higher clocked 9800x3d.

Aren't these the ones that are short circuiting and burning up with AS Rock motherboards.
