WOW!!! I did not know that!!!! So if you have a rusty cast iron pan and put it in the oven on the cleaning cycle it cleans the rust off?????? I don't have any --- but I have toyed with the idea of getting some.

Do they work well on flat top cooking tops? How do you clean them? How do you season them? Any disadvantage to them?
An oven gets very hot during the cleaning cycle. I've known some people to put rusty cast iron in an outdoor bonfire. It's the heat that does it. The rust flakes off.

Afterwards, you need to scrub the pans with steel wool to get the last of the rust flakes off, then re-season them.

They work fine on a flat cooking surface.

Clean them by wiping out with a paper towel after cooking with them. A well seasoned cast iron pan is completely non-stick, and the more you cook foods in them with oil or shortening, the more "seasoned" they get.

Once in a while you can wash with soap and water, but only do that before you're going to fry or sautee something in them so they will stay seasoned.

If you ever wash them in the dishwasher, you'll have to re-season them.

Season by rubbing them inside real good with shortening or lard, and place them in a hot oven for a few hours. If they're new, or if the seasoning has been undone (like if they were in the dishwasher or got rusty), you may need to re-season a few times until they become non-stick again.

The main disadvantage is that they are heavy. Be careful not to drop them; they can break your food or dent a sink.

I just drank the last of our iced tea. We have Kool aid, so that's good I guess. *lol* I had some pop, but it's gone too. I hate having that in the house - it disappears too quickly!!

Dh just emailed me to say they are having a weight loss challenge at work and he wants to do a strict Atkins diet. Oy... I'm not a fan of no-carbs. It makes me nervous to think of that - but I guess we'll be doing a ton of veggie dishes (which isn't bad). Well, I think *he* will, I should say. I don't think with the pregnancy and breast feeding that I'll be able to do no-carbs at all. I just think there's room in a diet for *some* carbs - i.e. the whole grain kind. *shrug*

Anyone ever get one of those shiny metal (I am guessing stainless) pots that have the built in pasta strainer that you just lift up to drain the pasta? Those look cool - do they work as well as they suggest?
i have the old costco version of this pot that also came w/ a steamer basket and it did not cost anywhere close to this online priceEEK!. i paid either 29.99 or 39.99
http://www.125west.com/p-5225-tra...k-pot.aspx

i love the strainer that locks onto the pot. less to wash and i just put it in the dishwasher.

i'm happy that it's stainless steel even though we have somewhat hard water so i have to dry my stainless steel pots so they don't have water spots. i don't put them in the dishwasher b/c i've had some problems w/ pitting w/ my farberwear stainless steel bowls and colander. hmmm, i think my strainer has a small pit or two also. need to start handwashing.

i love my pot. it's the perfect size for me and dh. i cook the pasta, strain it, pour the sauce that i heated up in a saucepan or skillet if i've done lots of veggies and/or meat in it, stir and serve.

but now costco has a gorgeous bigger 8qt stainless steel tramontina multi-pot w/ bigger handles for i think 39.99 or maybe the most 49.99 and i'm so dying to upgrade but i already have an 8qt stockpot and a 12qt all-clad w/ pasta insert (or maybe steamer, i've used it only once to cook a big lobster).

oh yeah, i have an ikea pot strainer-
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog...s/90112480

also love it! the ones from the dollar store always rust and get yucky after a yr or two. this one is good size and good quality and can go in the dishwasher, no problem. i use it to drain small to medium saucepans up to my 10in skillet when draining the fat and liquid when browning ground turkey, sausage, etc.

i'm gradually switching from hard-anodized to stainless steel. the newer mirror-finish are easier to clean than the old stainless steel. more maintenance but last longer that i even want Wink, don't warp, don't have to worry about cooking acidic food that will de-anodize and silly to also have stainless steel pots and pans to cook foods w/ tomato or vinegar, don't have to worry about ingesting non-stick particles, don't have to constantly be shopping for replacement pots and pans.

Not necessarily...google oral allergy syndrome. Here is a good link:

http://www.foodallergy.org/page/o...-syndrome1

Also, sometimes people also have allergies to particular food raw but then when they are cooked they are no longer a problem because the proteins cook out. Not always the case.

As dd has gotten older I make sure she is ALWAYS in the cart when we go shopping, no getting out to walk....because at that age they want to touch everything and out of sheer curiousity she is particularly interested in bananas since we have never had them in our home. She almost lost her mommy to this when she was 6 mos. old so we don't take any chances!
It is a good idea to keep her in the cart then - when she gets older she will know what to watch out for.

That is interesting about the cooked part - I hate the swelling I get from eating grapes --- I get all wheezy and it feels hard to breathe when my throat swells up. I used to eat grapes all the time. Frown There are foods I can't eat because I tested allergic to them at the allergist like avacado, coconut, pineapple ... and of course the traditional stuff sends me into an asthmatic wheezing sneezing tears pouring frenzy - mold, mildew, (these two are KILLERS at triggering attacks,) dust, pollens, CATS, BIRDS, horses (to a lesser extent,) hay, alfalfa .... BAH ... allergies are LAME!

There is a weird thing that I learned ... but obviously does not apply to everyone ... many folks who are allergic to avacado are also allergic to latex & the sticky on bandaids ... so far I am only having a prob with avacado and do not have the latex or bandaid probs. My Mum has all three and the allergist told us that is common. Strange!

I also tested positive with a HUGE reaction to milk ... but I am fine with that in small quantitites ... so who knows about how accurate those things are??????

DH had something similar with carrots when he eats them raw. He says his mouth and throat get itchy and he said it feels like his throat is swelling. The Dr said that he does not have a allergy to carrots but he does have seasonal allergies. The protiens (IIRC could have been enzymes or something) in carrots are very similar to the 'protiens' in what he is allergic too so his body reacts in a similar way. Crazy, but it sounded right and don't know what else it could be. There is actually a medical term for it but I can not remember for the life of me... something with sensitivity at the end, I think. Oh kick in frappuccino, get my brain out of the fog. I need to get my T run organized!
That is interesting! Hmmm - I wonder if that is what it is? I dunno .... Here is sending brain clearing thoughts!!!!!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I thought I was weird.

I can tolerate a few shreds of raw carrots in salads just fine. I can eat cooked carrots, no problem at all.

But if I eat a raw carrot or too many shreds- ummm, not sure exactly how to describe it, but I guess it's my nasal passages that swell up and I can't breathe. It gives me a very uncomfortable strangling sensation.
You are not alone ---- my daughter's friend can NOT eat raw carrots ... and to be honest she basically never eats any carrots at all but I *think* she can eat cooked ones I am not sure. I would be so bummed if I couldn't eat carrots! I love them!

I am so excited - I am now all set with 2 free tickets to Hershey Park for me and hubby!! Our grocery store had a promo and it was based on regular prices, not sale prices. Big Grin My freezer is full of hot dogs, lunch meat and bacon. I've already let my sisters know they can pick a weekend to watch the kids so hubby and I can get away for a day.

Dia, hubby didn't like the taste of the mix in general. Not sure what exactly, but he said they were nowhere near as good as my "regular" pancakes. I have a yummy oatmeal buttermilk recipe I use ordinarily, so I guess the boxed version falls a very distant second. Oh well. The shelter appreciates all those boxes of pancake mix! nod So they are definitely not going to waste.
WHOO HOOO! Have fun at Hershey Park!!! What fun!!!

I can see donating them so others can use them - y'all may have more sensitive taste buds ... it is funny what tastes fine to one person doesn't to another -

I would love to have a copy of that recipie ... I think the oatmeal in it sounds good!

could be you can drink the juice b/c it's been processed and/or pasteurized.

or maybe they don't use a certain chemical for juice grapes that they do for table grapes. i cannot eat apples from the supermarket. i can eat u-pick apples from the local farms and no problems w/ juice and products w/ apples in them like pies, etc.

when i was in elementary school grapes used to give me nose-bleeds. from about 1st till 7th or 8th.
Hmmm - maybe that is it! Strange about the grapes - one chap I dated when I was a teen used to get nose bleeds all the time and his doctor told him that he should eat grapes daily in order to increase his intake of Vit K ... it seemed to work he got fewer nose bleeds when eating grapes. I think human body chemistry is so odd!!

Way OFF TOPIC

But had to share my good news!

Yahoo! Dance13 I finally have a functioning air conditioner at work as of 5 minutes ago Dance13 Yahoo!

I'm a bookkeeper at a sandblasting outfit and my office is just a metal box inside a larger metal warehouse. It had a small portable floor standing air conditioner that just couldn't keep up with the demand in my office. I'd come in and it would be around 76 in the am and no joking it would be up OVER 97 in my office by the time I'd leave. It was miserable! Those last few hours each day were so unproductive I could barely think with all the heat. But I barely got any sympathy from the rest of the company as they all work out in the warehouse where there is never any air.

Cold Grin I think I might just leave the thermostat at 70 for the next day or two Grin Cold

Yeah on the sugar - I wouldn't want to add any unless necessary - I try and limit the sugar intake. I am sorry about the blueberries - I would be so sad without blueberries! Bananas I could live without & mangos I don't like at all!!!! I can't stand sweet fruit - I like fruit with tartness to it. I hope that the allergies diminish!!!!!

I have a question - if I cooked the strawberries longer would they get thicker? Less liquidy?
*snip*
In my experience yes, it will thicken a bit more but you will also run the risk of scorching. The lemon juice helps it set up too....combined with the low amt. of pectin that naturally occurs in the fruit. We are sad w/o the blueberries, especially DH. Hopefully it will be temporary! I do not actually ever remember having eaten a banana. I am sure my mom fed them to me when I was a baby but I just don't remember. Found out about the allergy eating things with banana in it. The smell of raw banana makes me vomit - sometimes instantaneously. I think it's a protective thing. The Cherimoya Punch Sobe smells like banana to me - makes me want to pukeTeehee

nod Yup on the bolded. Bananas is in the same grouping of allergens (they contain similar proteins) so on my med. ID it tells my allergy and also 'no latex.' Have to avoid that and the avocados as much as possible; there are a couple other relatives that aren't as likely. Avocados are pretty easy, just have to watch out for guacamole! Latex is a bit harder, I avoid as much as possible. I was pretty excited to be getting the Nexcare bandaids so cheap because they are one of the Nexcare varieties that don't contain latex.

Adding sugar will thicken it a bit - or maybe a little corn starch or unflavored gelatin. You may need to experiment with quantity.

The main disadvantage of cast iron is the weight. I have very weak wrists (active child/adult who's broken each wrist 4 times... *sigh*) and it can be a challenge lifting the pans. I *love* my cast iron though. I often will brown my chicken in it, then pop the whole pan in the oven to finish cooking. I love the dual purposeness of it. Plus, there's just something about cornbread cooked in cast iron. For cleaning, I generally wipe with a paper towel and leave it. Occasionally, I'll "wash" it - but little to no soap and use a scrubby pad. You have to re-season it though, and that is a longish process. Basically, you oil and bake it - cool down, and oil and bake it at least once more. You can also do some deep frying in it to help season it (i.e. frying green tomatoes, home made french fries, etc...)

Bananas will freeze and look normal if you freeze them in the peel. The peel will get dark brown/black though - but it doesn't affect the actual banana. However, if the banana defrosts and sits for a little bit, the color will change. Also, it's very mushy when defrosted - especially if it was really ripe when you threw it in the freezer.

You should see when I buy bananas... lol.
You are a good wife!!!!

I don't want to add more sugar - I liked the idea of not too much sugar ... but the unflavored gelatin might be a thought ....

I will keep an eye out for cast iron and see if something catches my eye.

I was trying to avoid freezing the whole banana in its peel ---- hmmmm. It would be for my son's smoothies or banana bread I don't really like bananas ... if I have to eat them they have to be fairly hard and JUST yellow a little green is ok but any brown and YUCK they are TOOOOOO sweet! Ever had a red banana? YUCK!

Quote from Nikayla :
We have a glass top stove and it has never scratched it. In 5 yrs still not a scratch on the glass top. I do rinse my skillet out with water and then dry it (a few times a week if something like eggs gets stuck or soemthing sticks a little bit). I wipe olive oil around inside it and then put it back on the hot burner to heat it through. Never had a problem. If just cooking stuff like grilled cheese or pancakes and no food is stuck I just wipe out with paper towells. Sometimes I still put a clean swipe of olive oil in it and heat it up just a bit so that I know any germies get died.
Good to know!!! Thanks! I am going to keep my eye out for one ... maybe it would help with my hopeless pancakes! LOL

If you are gonna freeze the banana, for say, choc covered bananas, the recipe I've seen is to drop them in OJ before freezing, and the citric acid won't allow the banana to brown.
Hmmmm - this is interesting!!!! I might try this! That would allow me to cut the banana into slices and freeze the slices .... hmmm

Ooooh I love sweet potatoes! You don't have to add anything to them and they are just DELICIOUS!!!! Well - so are sweet potato chips .... but those are NOT good for you! LOL

The Atkins diet is not inherently bad - remember everyone's body chemistry is different and they respond differently to different foods etc ... for many the low carb diets REALLY REALLY help them. There is no rule that you have to eat TONS of fat although the diet allows for naturally occuring fats even saturated ones in meat ... but you can choose fish, egg whites and low fat meats for the protien as well and they DO eat veggie just lots of the dark leafy variety & celery & broc & cauliflower etc ... they avoid the starchier veggies like corn or peas. They have to avoid breads, pastas, sugars, and most processed foods. I know that one of the areas to watch is that dairy is limited because of the natural milk sugars ... again you can get calcium from some veggies as well as some fish/shellfish but make sure that vitamins are being taken to be sure. For many who are diabetic it has really helped them and allowed them to live lives with fewer meds ... but again they DO eat veggies they just have a higher balance of low fat protiens then many diets. I have had a couple of friends use it very successfully & they have a modified version they use on a daily basis and all of their doc visits have been great - one no longer takes any meds for his diabetes and his blood sugars are all in a healthy range & both have healthy BP & Chol levels now. Both do splurge from time to time and have some ice cream or a treat but they then just return as normal to their "maintenance diet" with lots of low fat protein/fish and tons of veggies and a small amount of fruits & nuts & occasional whole wheat grains and it works great. They say that it is easier for them to stay healthy & active without the extra weight and if they aren't eating the pasta/grains/sugars they don't crave them anymore (I guess it was REALLY tough at the beginning.)

Being pregnant or BFing you shouldn't be dieting - but eating lots of veggies is never a bad thing and then you can add the grains/pastas that you need as well as the dairy.

I don't have any tile to chip ---- but someday I will LOL

maintenance meaning more effort to clean and then hand dry stainless steel. usually i have to soak a bit and then a blue multi-purpose scotchbrite usually does the the trick. i almost never have to resort to the green scotchbrite, ajax, comet or softscrub. i grew up w/ stainless steel and i think my parents scrubbed the finish off of all their pot, pans and dishes b/c they used the heavy duty scotchbrite scrubbing pads to clean everything. i think it puts micro-scratches in everything and then stuff sticks. now w/ mirror finish stuff slides off easier and easier to clean, just don't take off the finish.

i did buy a new non-stick green cuisine cuisinart frying pan back in dec for eggs and stuff and that cleans more easily w/ a sponge and soap and water. it's my 3rd non-stick frying pan. the sitram stainless steel frying pans that cost about the same still going strong except the glass lid broke so i had to buy a universal lid from homegoods. i stay away from glass lids now that 2 broke.

the acid in ex. tomatoes can de-anodize anodized aluminum. so w/ calphalon one they anodized all the way thru instead of just a layer on top of shiny aluminum. but i've thought about it and doesn't that mean the finish is coming off but you just don't notice? and then i'm ingesting aluminum that has been linked to alzheimers. the saute pans can warp after awhile which mine did. so 4 pieces (2 pots and lids) of my 10pc set need to be replaced. which i will do w/ stainless steel. don't have to worry about ingesting inert stainless steel, won't warp, last 3x longer or maybe even lifetime. more effort scrubbing and drying but less cost and more peace of mind.

we have local corn which i know my cousin parboils and freezes. no room in my freezer to do such things so i only eat corn on the cob in the summer.

I'm not sure about 31604 either... *lol*

I will have to look into the Atkin's diet more. I definitely like the idea of fresh/additional veggies and greens. I just don't want to be doing a lot of fatty things like bacon, red meats, etc... We eat *fairly* healthy, though some of the processed things have made their way back into our diet lately. Guess it's good to be purging anyways.

I love love love love love corn on the cob, sliced vidalias, and fresh sliced maters. Butter, salt & pepper, and I'm in heaven. I'm so totally going to the market w/dh this weekend... lol. I need me some fresh local produce!

As for freezing it, I've never done it on the whole cob before - but that sounds interesting. I have cut the kernels off and frozen on a cookie sheet for 20 minutes, then toss in a ziploc. It's so delicious. That's another yummy frozen treat - corn and peas. They taste pretty sweet and are fun to eat.

Ya'll are making me hungry and I'm late with dinner. Frown

I just put the chicken in the oven (in my cast iron skillet!) I took a little sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, and heated in the skillet. I rubbed the chicken with salt, pepper, onion, & garlic. I just realized I forgot the ginger... lol. Oh well. Browned it on each side and slipped in my oven. It smells heavenly. Well, I think it does. My toddler came in the house for a drink and said "Mamma! That smells awful!!" Thanks luv...

Roll

Ugh. We have more flies than I like to admit... I really hate to have those darn sticky fly tapes hanging around, but I may have to break down and get some. GRRRR...

Hmm... anyone doing a cookout this weekend? DH told me "everyone is coming over" on Monday! *laugh* What to make?? I can get some chicken/burgers to grill - but what about sides? I'm always at a loss for good, easy, picnic-friendly sides. Argh... we also have our church dinner on Sunday. Hmm... need something for that. I think I'll do fried chicken for that though - that should be easy to make and take.

Oooh... maybe I could do cold fried chicken - cook it all up on Saturday and then be done with it. What do you think about having cold chicken? I used to love it as a kid, but I was (am) a weird kid...

hmmm, i have to try that instead of giving away stuff i didn't eat when i'm going away. my bff/neighbor always gets a present b4 i go away instead of a souvenir after i get back.
I like neighbors like you...
