I find white distilled vinegar quite effective at deterring insects around trash and as an odor neutralizer. I spray every time when I add trash to the barrel. Using decent-quality, well-sealed trash bags also helps.
Distilled white vinegar is also an affordable [walmart.com] and effective sanitizing cleaner, great for bathrooms and kitchens. I fill a 32-ounce spray bottle with it and add a squirt of Dawn Dish Soap. Avoid cleaning shiny/glossy plastics, rubber, and metals with vinegar though, as its acidity can tarnish and discolor them over time
Overall, I've heard nothing but good things about Terro T800s though. They seem to be a highly effective and decent product, which is unusual for Terro, in my opinion.
Not to unnecessarily trash the company, but in my experience, their ant and termite products are overpriced and not very effective. Taurus SC [domyown.com] is far superior to Terro's ant/termite killer and is cheaper over time. A single bottle of Taurus SC will last about five years for treating the perimeter of a 1,500 sq. ft. home. Just respect Taurus SC power though and don't go crazy with it...
for some reason a few years ago, we have been getting a large amount of them in the yard. Never had this issue before and we've lived here forever. I do also use the granules sometimes, but I believe those are bonide.

I find that spraying the outside perimeter of my home twice a year (in spring and fall) with Taurus SC works best. I could probably get away with just a spring spraying, but I'm terrified of the ants returning.
Overall, I use Taurus SC [diypestcontrol.com] for the outside and food-grade diatomaceous earth [amazon.com] on the inside. This combination has served me well and has kept my home pest-free for over five years now. And, wow, did I have an unbelievable ant problem. It must have been because my home sat vacant for a few years—with a producing apple tree approximately 20 feet away.
