I have been using these for years. They work really well. Early on, I lost a couple when the adhesive came loose (or it got knocked off when the bin was dumped into the truck). I drilled a couple small holes in the bin lid and now loop a zip-tie through to hold it. Never lost another one.

if you dumped your trash daily, you won't need any of this
Daily drive to the dump? Why own a bin at all then?

This is for the outdoor trashcan. Pickup is usually once or twice a week for most people. This is to kill any insects that get inside between that time.

Just vinegar? Man, I was spraying down the inside with bleach trying to choke those farkers out and they just kept coming. I'll give vinegar a try.
Just make sure you don't mix bleach and vinegar together. I don't want to sound pedantic, and you're probably cognizant of this, but combining them creates highly toxic chlorine gas [sciencenotes.org]. Ensure that your trash barrels are completely dry of and don't contain any bleach before spraying.

I find white distilled vinegar quite effective at deterring insects around trash and as an odor neutralizer. I spray every time when I add trash to the barrel. Using decent-quality, well-sealed trash bags also helps.

Distilled white vinegar is also an affordable [walmart.com] and effective sanitizing cleaner, great for bathrooms and kitchens. I fill a 32-ounce spray bottle with it and add a squirt of Dawn Dish Soap. Avoid cleaning shiny/glossy plastics, rubber, and metals with vinegar though, as its acidity can tarnish and discolor them over time

These work great, use them in my trash and recycle. I use zip ties as my cans have a middle portion that attaches to the lid

Ha, sounds like those lizards found their Shangri-La—stinky as it may be. I've had good luck spraying down my trash barrels inside and out with white distilled vinegar. It works so well that I'm contemplating canceling my order, as 30% off isn't up to my Cheap Basterd standards.

Overall, I've heard nothing but good things about Terro T800s though. They seem to be a highly effective and decent product, which is unusual for Terro, in my opinion.

Not to unnecessarily trash the company, but in my experience, their ant and termite products are overpriced and not very effective. Taurus SC [domyown.com] is far superior to Terro's ant/termite killer and is cheaper over time. A single bottle of Taurus SC will last about five years for treating the perimeter of a 1,500 sq. ft. home. Just respect Taurus SC power though and don't go crazy with it...
I'm surprised to hear that. I found that the liquid ant bait from Terro is the most effective thing I ever found for them.
for some reason a few years ago, we have been getting a large amount of them in the yard. Never had this issue before and we've lived here forever. I do also use the granules sometimes, but I believe those are bonide.

I had a horrendous ant problem when I moved into my home around eight years ago, as I described in this post. The only thing that worked was Taurus SC—Terro products had no noticeable effect on the overall ant population.

I find that spraying the outside perimeter of my home twice a year (in spring and fall) with Taurus SC works best. I could probably get away with just a spring spraying, but I'm terrified of the ants returning.

Overall, I use Taurus SC [diypestcontrol.com] for the outside and food-grade diatomaceous earth [amazon.com] on the inside. This combination has served me well and has kept my home pest-free for over five years now. And, wow, did I have an unbelievable ant problem. It must have been because my home sat vacant for a few years—with a producing apple tree approximately 20 feet away.
