LOL that's not really correct... Premium stuff can have up to 50% more additives and a better, cleaner VM. Yes there are mainly 4 large additive companies (many more medium and smaller) but let's take the biggest of those 4, Lubrizol. They sell many different additive packages so just because many blenders buy from them doesn't mean they buy the same package.

The stuff sold at a price point (bargain basement) will meet API SP and dexos1 will have a treat rate of about 8.5% wt in the engine oil. Treat rate is the focus for products sold under a bid as the additive is sold by the ton, the less you use the cheaper the product. The more premium stuff will meet ACEA, MB 229, VW 501, etc. and have a treat rate of closer to 13%.

Now the clincher for me is that cheap additive package will pair with a cheap viscosity modifier (VM), the stuff that makes it a 0W-xx, usually some olefin copolymer (OCP). These are what I refer to as dirty polymers because they tend to leave more deposits as they break down (piston walls, skirts, rings, turbo bearings).

Those premium packages because they need to pass more stringent Euro specs will use a styrenic type polymer usually a star polymer which is a cleaner and more shear stable VM. This helps us keep the pistons cleaner = less scuffing, blow by, better power, better fuel economy, and these days more importantly a cleaner turbo as those are very hard on oil.

In the end the cheap stuff will not kill your engine, but much like living on ramen noodles and McDonalds it isn't going to make that engine stay at like new performance. I used to formulate this stuff before I retired so happy to answer questions.

You can use 0w-20 just fine. Heck same motor outside the US calls for up to 5w-30

Lower viscosity in the US is for CAFE reasons, not motor longevity.

Did this last time and just finally used up the last of it after 3 years. I've decided it's worth the extra $20-$30 to just buy in real time.
I literally just returned an unopened case of Kirkland 5W-30 today which I bought in April 2024 (no longer have my vehicle for that oil). It stacked nicely with my case of Kirkland 0W-20. In the mean time I wasn't burdened by it at all.

Almost exactly 2 years ago, I bought 16 jugs of various weights for $274. That's about $17 per. No Time Machine. Just an FYI.

Buy 0W-20 and relax. Toyota is stupid. Just be happy your car isn't calling for 0W-8 piss water.
Sometimes the same exact car in a different country calls for thicker oil. Thinner oil is used in the US to squeeze out the tiniest mpg savings to meet the stupid cafe rules. Thicker oil has slightly worse mpg but better protection against wear and tear.

During Jan 2023, I purchased Kirkland Signature 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 5-quart, 2-pack (qty: 5) for $174 with tax (i.e., ten 5-quart bottles).

Today, I bought Kirkland Signature 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5-quart, 4-pack (qty: 3) for $176 with tax (i.e, twelve 5-quart bottles). Two extra bottles for the same price compared to two years ago.

Ok.. well go get the engine number and Google it.Thos is car oil. Small engine oil is typically different. You bought a honda engine, put the right oil in it.and if you're a new homeowner.. my suggestion is to keep those books. you'll refer to them over time
You can absolutely use "Car" Engine oil in a small engine if its a 4 stroke, You don't need 4 Stroke Sport oil.

We have a 2005 Camry that's still running fine. Been in the shop a couple times for a steering rack and evap canister, besides that, I've done all the maintenance/repairs on our vehicles. Toyotas are just so easy to work on and last for years.

I agree that Toyotas are one of the longest lasting cars on the road.
And they rarely need repairs if maintained.

But easy to work on? EEK!

Maybe I just got REALLYYYYYY unlucky.
But I am not exactly a newb in the shop. And after an RX350, Rav4, ES330 and Tundra, I have yet to find one that does not just about require an exorcism to get to anything.

A lot of times, it may have a spec that's not listed on some engine oils. Or it could ask for say SAE30 vs a Xxw-30.

It would probably work but may not be the correct one.

It's not really hard to hang onto the book and look.

I prefer throwing the books in a drawer in my garage because my time saved searching the internet vs. opening a small book to get the correct oil.

to each their own.

This is above mid grade oil . This oil and Walmarts oil is just as good as AMSOIL and royal purple. If you Don't believe me , believe Lake speed jr. - Lake Speed Jr. is a certified lubrication specialist and a well-known tribologist, meaning he specializes in the science and engineering of friction and lubrication

There are only 4 major companies in the that make the additives that go in oil.

Thanks for posting - Agreed on Lake Speed, he is a friend from motorsports days (Joe Gibbs) and one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet regarding this subject. The only thing I would add is if this oil is for general use/daily driver it's a very good value. However if someone is running a high performance car/racing and/or concerned about bore scoring even Lake will tell you to switch over to specialty oils such as Driven etc. (And for the record I'll be buying Kirkland for my daily drivers!)

oil doesn't really breakdown, the plastic bottle holding it will split first.

New homeowner here. I have the toro timemaster and a Ryobi power washer with a Honda engine. Is this good for those? If yes, which one? (I live in NY, if the temperature matters)
Probably, plain sae30..but, I've seen my pops use motor oil. Read your manual or Google your model and oil. You might have a mix of oil/gas situation going on.

Or, pack everything up and head to a good Lowes w knowledgeable folk, an ace or local sales/repair for saws/garden shop and just ask
