LOL that's not really correct... Premium stuff can have up to 50% more additives and a better, cleaner VM. Yes there are mainly 4 large additive companies (many more medium and smaller) but let's take the biggest of those 4, Lubrizol. They sell many different additive packages so just because many blenders buy from them doesn't mean they buy the same package.

The stuff sold at a price point (bargain basement) will meet API SP and dexos1 will have a treat rate of about 8.5% wt in the engine oil. Treat rate is the focus for products sold under a bid as the additive is sold by the ton, the less you use the cheaper the product. The more premium stuff will meet ACEA, MB 229, VW 501, etc. and have a treat rate of closer to 13%.

Now the clincher for me is that cheap additive package will pair with a cheap viscosity modifier (VM), the stuff that makes it a 0W-xx, usually some olefin copolymer (OCP). These are what I refer to as dirty polymers because they tend to leave more deposits as they break down (piston walls, skirts, rings, turbo bearings).

Those premium packages because they need to pass more stringent Euro specs will use a styrenic type polymer usually a star polymer which is a cleaner and more shear stable VM. This helps us keep the pistons cleaner = less scuffing, blow by, better power, better fuel economy, and these days more importantly a cleaner turbo as those are very hard on oil.

In the end the cheap stuff will not kill your engine, but much like living on ramen noodles and McDonalds it isn't going to make that engine stay at like new performance. I used to formulate this stuff before I retired so happy to answer questions.

You can use 0w-20 just fine. Heck same motor outside the US calls for up to 5w-30

Lower viscosity in the US is for CAFE reasons, not motor longevity.

Not this deal, but there's someone on Reddit who says they have (2) OW20 5QTs for $30.

Yeah, that's the reoccurring in-store deal. It happens every couple of months and was just getting started when this better deal hit the front page. I bought in a few days ago after missing out here so I can confirm the price but it's ending tomorrow IIRC.

That's what I remember seeing... Been putting ordering it off to now find out deal is dead.. 😩
FWIW, the 12 pack is still on sale [costco.com] and available in the same viscosities and variety packs as this deal. It's $2.91 a quart vs. $2.70 on this deal. For me, that's a a mere $1 more per oil change so not that big of deal. Plus I'll have some handy 1qt bottles to keep in the vehicles for top offs and to bring on long trips.

Although this deal is cheaper, it looks like it's dead. The in-store Costco promotion is currently 2-pack for $30 at the Chicagoland Costco.

Ordered on April 16 2025. Received first delay notification the following day on the 17th

"Due to the increased response for this item, we regret to inform you that there will be some additional delay in fulfilling your order. Please be assured that your order is expected to ship 4/21/2025. Once your order has shipped, you will receive an email with tracking information."

New delay notification received April 22 2025 below.

Due to the overwhelming response for this item, we regret to inform you that there will be a delay in fulfilling your order. Please be assured that your order will ship by the week of Apr 28, 2025 - May 2, 2025. Once your order has shipped, you will receive an email with tracking information.

April 25 2025 received a notification email saying it was "Shipped" and the link in the email shows "Your order has been fulfilled and given to the carrier. Once the carrier scans your package, you'll see additional updates." with a UPS tracking number.
It's now May 05 2025 and the tracking number provided still shows

"Label Created United States
04/25/2025, 3:22 P.M."
"UPS doesn't have possession of the package yet. Estimated delivery date will be available as soon as we get the package."

At this point I have zero faith in Costco. fool me once , shame on you! fool me twice, Shame on me. at this point were on the 3rd set of lies from Costco. I know one thing is certain. I will not be renewing my Costco membership this fall nor will I order anything from them between then and now. I prefer Sams anyways and it's 5 miles closer in distance.

Can't believe how quickly this deal ended. about 2 weeks before it's "expiration" date. Should've followed the Slickdeals golden rule of ordering first and deciding later...
