NewEgg sucks with their H&R Block pricing this year.

For many years, longtime SD'ers who used NewEgg to purchase H&R Block software were used to prices well below $20 (sometimes even free with bundled software and rebates).

This year, they've never really gotten below $20 without a few hoops.

This $30 price is pure greed on either NewEgg's part or H&R Block.

As a side note, I used FreeTaxUSA this year to double-check my own H&R Block tax return and the numbers were the same. I have a little bit beyond a simple tax return (i.e. W2, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-R, 1099-B, including figuring out the exemption of US Treasury returns for State income tax purposes). Both programs figured out everything exactly.

So, while I still prefer H&R Block I will give kudo's to FreeTaxUSA and the users here who love/use it. FreeTaxUSA is a great alternative Tax filing option. The interviews are very simple and easy to navigate through.

Screw NewEgg though...

Reps to the OP though for bringing the info...I don't mean to threadcrap on your hard work to bring this info, as many SD'ers are looking for these types of deal notifications. woot

Tried out FreeTaxUSA this year since H&R Block wouldn't budge on the price. Never going back... Got the same return numbers between FreeTaxUSA and CashApp Taxes.

The one thing that stopped me in the past was the lack of brokerage import. However, I like that FreeTaxUSA lets you enter summary totals and then upload statements for your non-covered stock transactions. Doing this was faster than H&R Block's import feature and having to click through and verify each transaction.

Exactly this....switched to FreeTaxUSA and it was fine. The summary 1099-B entries are tolerable.

I never caught the lowest price this season so I ended up paying this $29.99 price, grudgingly.

I have been a HODLer since January. I was not happy with the price gouging this year. I am a 10+ year user of H&R Block, so I was hesitant to switch.

I decided to try FREETAXUSA a couple days ago. I will never go back to H&R Block. If you're on the fence or need an extra push to switch, this is your sign. I was in your same position a week ago.

FTUSA UI is light years ahead of the blocky traditional software. It was very easy, intuitive, multiple W2s, a 1099, itemized deductions, it was an absolute breeze. Free federal file and $15 for my state efile, I saved buying overpriced software and sure, they have my data which H&R Block has been monetizing for years anyway.

SDers, make the switch, don't give these profiteering, lobbying tax software corps more money.

I still get it but don't like their gouging. A second state return can ONLY be obtained from HRB, costs $40 (more than I pay for premium federal plus one state but you must obtain the "free" state from within the software so no way to buy two programs).
This year I had trouble even buying a second state from the HRB website and had to have a support person give me a link for the program I bought.
On top of that, $20 to efile that state return (the "free" (included) one, or the extra one bought for $40). And last year when I extended my return, it would've been an efile fee to do that. Fortunately, I was able to go to IRS and state sites. (One state is NY, which requires eFile and doesn't allow software companies to charge for same; I wish more states would do that... OK, all I care about is NJ for that.)

Everyone hating on NewEgg but I think this is an HR Block thing on pricing. No one really had any good deals like in years past.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Can you elaborate on what you still prefer about H&R Block?

Maybe for those with simple tax situations. Once you have real estate, sell stocks, or have a side business freetaxusa will not be enough.
More details please. I do not do my taxes myself but plan to, so trying to learn what's what

Glad to get it at $22.49 a couple months ago at Newegg and received all tax refunds a few weeks ago already.
