Ok, so the camera function is pretty terrible quality wise. But my son has loved this thing since he got it almost 3 years ago (he was playing with it 2 days ago despite having a retro gaming handheld, a modern cell phone with games, etc). So, for a 3-4 (maybe even 5) year old I can definitely recommend

I bit on one as a gift for an upcoming 3rd birthday. Reading the reviews it seems like it's rugged enough for toddlers with good enough image quality considering the target audience, though using any of the effects down grades the pictures from 5mp to 2mp.

The one thing that almost gave me pause was a review that mentioned this camera had a few built-in games. This was concerning, because my kid immediately finds games on any device they play with 😀 but further googling seems to indicate that there's a parental controls function to disable that menu option so fingers crossed that wasn't just an AI hallucination

A few years ago, I'd recommend a used point-and-shoot on eBay. But those seem to be drying up. When my 11-year-old was a 3-year-old, that's what we got, for a similar price. It looks like the sub $40 used waterproof camera market is still going strong on eBay though.

I got a similar one from Temu/aliexpress a while ago for half this price but it's smaller and less intuitive looking.

My daughter had one similar to this around 8 years ago. It was fun and durable, but images were pretty rough. Does anyone know if these cameras have improved or if it's still the same insides as all those years ago?

We also have a very similar looking one that is supposedly 5MP, but pretty rough quality. This is 8MP, so maybe better?

Read the 8mp is just an interpolated 5mp sensor ...so basically the same sensor with software to blow it up. In other words I doubt you ll see much of a difference.
