you mean someone who has zero interest in getting a good image. I was on the Bay of Banderas in PV, Mx a few weeks ago on a whale watching boat. Around 80% of the people had smartphones and the rest of us had our cameras of various kinds. Afterwards most of us got together at a restaurant for food, drink and to talk about our images. The cell phone people were sadly disappointed as they had the wrong tool for the job since no reach and no EVF and next to impossible to see the target on the screen in bright sun. One will never see a wildlife or sports photographer shooting with their smartphone. That said, they certainly have their place for capturing a shot. Sadly these people have no clue or don't care about editing. EDIT: that D7500 at $499. is a solid choice as there are many hundreds of lenses to use from Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, etc. and some like the DX-P Nikon lenses (lightweight and sharp) are are bargain that compete well against some that cost 2-3x more. Add in the 1.5x crop with the Nikon dslr APS-C sensor for that takes you out farther.
Yes, most ship out clean and nick free, but they do not come in retail boxes and cardboard. Mostly bubble wrapped in a white box. Units from my personal experience are very low shutter counts. I have never had a body with more than 100 shutter actuations.

Source: 2 lenses and 4 bodies in the past 3 years of refurb purchases.

Well dang. The sale a few weeks ago had the 70-200 2.8 at 1699. Now it's 1754. Guess I snoozed expecting a better deal, learned a lesson today.
It's like 2% more 😂

EVF is the electronic viewfinder. Its a tiny screen that you look at through an eye piece to compose photos.
The Z30 does not have this, you look at the back screen to compose your photos.

This simplifies things but can also be a nightmare to nail focus if you're in a bright sunny day.
I literally just had this experience trying to get a shot with a 24-70 on a z30 and trying to track my kid. Luckily...the z30 has pretty decent autofocus but I was still shooting quite blind in terms of seeing if I'm getting things in focus.

Thank you! I don't like the sound of that. Think I'll wait. Thank you for all the info. I'm learning but sometimes, it's a slow process! 🥴

Looking for some advice. I make streaming videos just for fun mainly talking with friends. I've seen people using DSLR cameras as webcams. Are any of the ones in the sale good for that application? Thanks for the advice as I'm asking out of ignorance here.

Bought the Z30 two lens kit to compliment my Z5 (and lots of cameras for other systems). Sounds like the Z30 is at least a small improvement over the Z50 and for $100 less I can live without an EVF. Rather get the Z50II eventually but can't afford it anytime soon.

Just somehow scored a super cheap Nikon Z 18-140mm on eBay recently so nice to have an APS-C body to use it on. Really appreciate what Nikon gave us with the kit lenses on Nikon Z DX which are far superior to Canon RF-S and Sony E mount kit lenses (based on the stellar reviews, no personal experience with them yet).

Most point and shoot cameras don't have EVFs and phone's certainly don't.
Also, to be fair, since switching to mirrorless from dslr, I've used the backscreen more often then I care to admit.

There are some very specific scenarios where I need to use the EVF and its on sunny days or if I need to track something.

In case taking pictures on a sunny day where it's going to be difficult seeing the image on the lcd screen, you can get a Hoodman loupe that can fit up to 3.2" screens. It's goes for $90 new but I was just on ebay and saw a few used for $20 plus shipping. When you are done with the camera sell it back on ebay.

example on ebay [ebay.com]

Using the screen is handy for quick run and gun shots or if you really need a specific angle where looking through EVF is not practical. Otherwise I prefer using EVF since I find it helps me compose/frame my shot better since there's less distracting stuff going on in my vision and also I can hold the camera more steady when I'm pressing my face against the camera as I look through the EVF. Useful when working with slower shutter speeds.

The only one DSLR I see for sale that is not over $1,000 is the D7500 for $500 body only. You can use this as a web cam, but it will take quite a few pieces of equipment to get it ready. Apart from the camera and lens, you will need a mini HDMI to HDMI cable to connect to your camera. The other end will connect to a video card. The video card has a HDMI port on one end and a USB-A or USB-C on the other end of the video card. To keep the power running, you will need a dummy battery that fits into the camera and a DC adapter to plug into the wall to avoid draining your battery when streaming online. On your camera settings menu, select the standby time to infinity, so the camera does not shut off while it's on standby. You can go on Zoom and search for your video card to select it under video, and you should see yourself using a DSLR camera.

If I were you and you want to use your camera as a web cam, I would recommend the Z30 with one lens for $426, $500 with two lenses. The other option is the Z50 with one lens for $500. The autofocus is much better than a DSLR and you would just need a USB-C cable to plug one end into your camera and the other end into your computer to use your camera as web cam. This is more efficient than the other pieces of equipment you need for the DSLR. I'm sure there's a better way for the DSLR configuration, but this is the one I'm familiar with and know it works. Hope this helps.

I picked up a Z30 with the 16-50 about 1.5 years back to complement my Z5/24-70 setup.

For what it is, I'm really happy with it. AF is reliable enough, and the 16-50 is significantly better than the 15-45 EF-M I had, along with the terrible Fuji 18-55 I had with my X-S10 before dumping it. IQ is above both my old Canon M5 and the Fuji.

That said, you can't get around physics, and of course my Z5+24-70/S blows it out of the water, especially when shooting RAW and pulling/pushing exposure. On the other hand, 90% of the photos I have printed in my house were shot with a combination of various APS-C cameras with kit lenses as the best camera is the one you have on you.

There's certainly times I miss the EVF, but it also means it's smaller.

Are Nikon refurbs basically equal to brand new? Much like Canon?
Nikon goes through them to make sure they're performing to spec. My Z8 refurb had a failed inbody stabilization gyro, that was the first time I've had an issue with a refurb, and I've bought maybe 8 bodies and lenses.

So I'd say close to brand new but probably a bit higher chance of an issue. At these prices, totally worth it.
