Nikon has their refurbished binoculars on sale, some of their great Monarch HG series listed below. They also have ProStaff series, but I would recommend others (like the Vortex Diamondback HD) if trying to buy something lower priced.

From my personal experience, their refurbished looks nothing more than taking a new one and placing it into a plain box. Excellent, new condition when purchasing HG 10x42 a few years back.

Monarch HG 10x42: $599.97 $999.95

These are rarely discounted below $900. To buy directly from Nikon at this price, even if refurbished, is a great deal

Great price but I think i'd prefer stabilized over primo optics in this price range. Nikon's (new?) 10x25 stabilized are $625, will keep an eye out for those refurbed on sale.

Would not recommend 25mm objective lens for birding or hunting...will struggle in lower light conditions compared to a 42mm. Doesn't have to be early morning or late evening...can be under shade and in denser woods/forests

You seem to know a lot about birding lenses and I don't, so just wondering what you thought of the monarch 5 - 12x42.
My current binoculars are bushnells and cost about $35 but they're 7x35 and I hate them, although they are better than the even crappier ones I had these.
The zoom isn't enough and they often go out of focus. For my birthday. I decided to treat myself but not sure which is best. I was leaning towards the monarch but didn't realize there were so many variations.
I'm looking at them for birding in my backyard, trees and shrubs are 20 to 50 ft away (not counting height of trees). I'd love to snatch these up since they are a good deal but want to be sure they are the right ones for me! Thanks for any assistance!

I think the field of view on the monarch 5 12x42 is a bit narrow for birding. they can work if you are experienced with higher magnification binoculars but are on the borderline too narrow field of view for birding and can seem shaky at that magnification without a very steady hand. You might have trouble locating the bird you are trying to find. Very good price but if you are used to only 7x magnification, will take some major adjustments on your part. $200 is a good deal on those but I am not sure I would want them as my primary birding binocular. The Monarch 5 10x42 or 8x42 are very nice and will be a nice step up from your current set. I ended up buying the Monarch 7's 10x42 myself a few years ago but was very impressed when I first looked through the Monarch 5's. The primary difference to my eye was the field of view on the 7's is better (one of the best under $1,000). The Monarch HG 10x42 that are part of this sale for $600 are great optics and a great deal and can only be meaningfully beat optically by stepping all the way up to alpha glass ($2000+ Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica, etc.) in my opinion

If it's your backyard I'd use a tripod with a ball head mount. Then you can use 10x or even 12x and get a steady view.
