I bought an open box excellent from Best Buy so I could check it in store. It was $86. Worth the $6 extra to know I was getting a working product.

New, open box... isn't that an oxymoron?

For the iPad Air (non-pro) how does the Pencil Pro function compare to the regular Apple Pencil?

Why not the cheap $20 knock off pencils off amazon?
I have both the $20 pencil, but I paid $16, and the Apple Pencil pro. They are both nice in their own way. The $16 pencil was inexpensive and works reasonably well. I'm on my second one. The first one I tried didn't work. It wouldn't write consistently. Broken lines all over the place. So I returned it and tried a different brand. This one works ok. But it is very slow to charge and must be plugged into a cable to do so. Battery life is about 3-4 hours. Not bad if you are only picking it up occasionally to do some work; however, at my last conference, it wouldn't last the whole day. So I had to charge it on lunch and because of the slow charging that wouldn't always fill it. It also turns off on its own sometimes, even while being used, especially when the battery starts getting below 50%. It also turns off on its own to save power. So have a few minutes in a meeting where you aren't writing and when you do go to write it's off. It's only a double tap on the backend to turn it on so this isn't the end of the world.

The pencil pro, by contrast, lives on the edge of my iPad Pro. So it's always charged, always ready to go. When I'm in that 5 minutes where I'm not taking notes I snap it back on to top it up. Pick it up and it's on and ready to go. There are some fun features like squeeze and roll that aren't supported by the lesser expensive pencils, as well as pressure sensitivity. I do make use of those for various app supported functions. I also have AppleCare+ on my iPad and that covers the Magic Keyboard and Pencil Pro as well.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the $20($16) version. If it meets your needs, I've found it works adequately. I just get a better experience and functionality out of the pencil pro.

If you see a stylus, and it costs $80, they blew it.

Why ask a rhetorical question? Don't answer that.

Do you use an iPad case that lets the Apple Pencil charge on your iPad ?

Yes. When it's on the Magic Keyboard there is no case, but when I take it off the Magic Keyboard I put it in the ESR rotating case with magnetic cover. My iPad mini also has a silicone case that allows for pencil charging.
